Enjoy river and ocean kayaking at a variety of venues in Squamish, thanks to the municipality's ideal location at the mouth of the Squamish River and the north end of Howe Sound.

Ocean Kayaking

With dozens of scenic bays, inlets, and stretches of open water to choose from, ocean kayaking near Squamish is an enjoyable and impressive adventure.

Porteau Cove Provincial Park, located 20km/12.4mi south of Squamish, is a great place to launch for a scenic shoreline paddle. Other ocean-kayaking areas in Howe Sound recommended by Tourism Squamish include Pam Rocks, Gambier Island, Anvil Island, and Christie Inlet.

River Kayaking

For those seeking an easy paddle or introduction to kayaking, the Mamquam River is a great option. Flowing directly through Squamish, it offers calm waters and lots of opportunities to view local birds, wildlife, and plants. Or try the Squamish River Estuary for another easy paddle. Bird-watching fans can view the Brackendale eagles while kayaking between late November and early February.

More advanced kayakers can get a whitewater adrenaline rush on the Upper Cheakamus River, which is rated Grade 4-5, or the Elaho River, which is rated Grade 3-4. Grade 6-rated water is available in the narrow, steep Ashlu Canyon.

For a laidback freshwater experience that's suitable for the whole family, go kayaking on a local lake such as Alice Lake in Alice Lake Provincial Park.
