Salty breezes, sandy shores, and soulful sunset views are among the attractions that draw swimmers to the half-dozen public beaches of Bowen Island. Swimming here is a treat in the summertime. The relaxed, tranquil atmosphere provides a pleasant contrast to the bustling beaches of nearby Vancouver.

The three most popular beaches on Bowen Island are Sandy Beach, Tunstall Bay, and Bowen Bay.

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is the closest beach to the Bowen Island ferry terminal in Snug Cove, and it lives up to its name. It's a nice place for the whole family to relax. Toilets, garbage disposal, and parking are available. Take a dip and check out the local waterfowl.

Tunstall Bay

The charming, sheltered Tunstall Bay is located on the west side of Bowen Island, and can be reached by car, bike, or direct bus service from Snug Cove. Originally, a retirement community was built here in the 1950s. Today, it's the busiest beach on the island with a combination of sandy and rocky terrain. Washrooms are available.

Sunbathe and admire the shimmering green-blue ocean waters, or watch kids taking sailing lessons and kayakers paddling around the island. Bowen residents rave about the awe-inspiring sunsets that can be seen at Tunstall Bay.

Bowen Bay

Directly north of Tunstall Bay lies Bowen Bay, a popular destination for young families due to its placid, shallow waters and sandy shores. Swim out to the float, and watch out for seals and seagulls. Public bathrooms are available.

Bowen Bay is also the site of the annual Bowen Island Polar Bear Swim on New Year's Day. The beach is served by local buses. The closest lodgings are the Willowdane Farm Cottages on Bowen Bay Road.

More Beaches on Bowen Island

There are other secluded ocean beaches around Bowen Island, many of which can be accessed by guests at cottages and B&Bs. It's also fun to hang out on the beach at the peaceful, duck-populated Killarney Lake in Crippen Regional Park.
