Gold Rush Trail - Jill Zimonick

Sometimes the best way to really grasp the vast beauty of the Williams Lake area is to get behind the wheel and take to the road. Williams Lake is a major stopping point on several touring routes and there are many scenic drives to enjoy here.

Gold Rush Trail

The historic Gold Rush Trail traces the route of the region's hardy miners who sought their fortunes here in the mid- to late-1800s.  The route takes in some impressive sites, including the magnificent Fraser Canyon through the lake country of the Cariboo to historic Barkerville, western Canada's premiere heritage site.  Opportunities for hiking, fishing, swimming, canoeing or whitewater rafting abound along this trail.  Because of the seasonal use of the road north of Likely, this route is only available during the summer season.

Starting in Cache Creek and touring north on Highway 97, drive 203 km/126 mi to Williams Lake and pass through former wagon stops of Clinton and 100 Mile House.  The drive to Williams Lake will take about 2.5 hours. Or start in Williams Lake, and head toward Big Lake and Likely to Historic Barkerville, Western Canada's premiere heritage site. From Barkerville, Highway 26 loops back into Highway 97 at Quesnel.  Because of the seasonal use of the road north of Likely, this route is only available during the summer season.  During the off season, visitors can carry on from Williams Lake to Quesnel on Highway 97 then east to Wells and Barkerville on Highway 26. Estimated touring time is 3-4, with two days reserved for Williams Lake

The Coast Cariboo Circle Tour

The Coast Cariboo Circle Tour is a popular driving tour and takes in several "eco-zones".  Do some wildlife viewing, horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, and even swimming with the salmon along the way.  While the highway to Bella Coola is open year round, BC Ferries operates the Discovery Coast Passage from June to September only, so the circle route is seasonal.
Estimated touring time 5 – 10 days   Learn more about the Coast Cariboo Circle Tour.

Lakes and Trails Circle Tour

Travel past lakes teaming with fish and wildlife on the Cariboo Chilcotin Coat Lakes and Trails Circle Tour.  Bird-watching, fishing, and hiking are all excellent options when stopping along the way. Marvel at the quiet beauty of the Bowron Lakes, check out the heart-stopping drops of some of Canada's highest waterfalls, or ramble along miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails. This route is a pleasure to explore during any season and takes approximately 7-10 days to complete. Learn more about the Lakes and Trails Circle Tour.
