Fishing at Cheslatta Falls, Shannon Himmelright photo
Vanderhoof is popular for river and lake fishing. The area around Vanderhoof has hundreds of rivers and lakes that expand in all directions. Some are just a few minutes drive away while others are best for overnight excursions. In addition to Rainbow Trout, species in the area include whitefish, char, Dolly Varden, lake trout, Kokanee, and more. Fishing Options Depending on where they are fishing, anglers can bring their own boat and equipment, or stay at one of many fishing lodges located south of town. Several lodges offer guided fishing, and rental boats and equipment. One popular, but more expensive option is to fly into Tweedsmuir Provincial Park on the Nechako Lodge floatplane. Nechako White Sturgeon An incredible fish in the area to view but not catch is the Nechako White Sturgeon, the largest freshwater fish in Canada. It's illegal to fish for these Sturgeon, but the species is nevertheless considered an important cultural aspect of the Vanderhoof community. Locals are intent on saving it and aim to develop a permanent hatchery for the fish. Practical Points - The most popular angling season is from May until October. Ice-fishing is also an option during the winter months.
- The Go Fish! brochure available at the Vanderhoof Visitor Centre is a great resource for anglers visiting the area. It lists up to 20 popular fishing lakes surrounding the town.
- Note that all fishers over 16 years old, resident and non-resident, need a license to fish even for a day, whether they catch something or not. These are available on the BC government website.
- Pick up a copy of the Sport Fishing Regulations Synopsis, at the Visitor Centre.
