In the excitement over ocean fishing and trophy-size salmon and halibut, some of the best freshwater fishing in BC is overlooked and underrated. Surrounded by mountains and fed by a glacier, Comox Lake offers first-rate freshwater fishing for trout and char throughout the year. And that's not all. Fishing Comox Lake Access Comox Lake and its boat launch just outside Cumberland. The catches are rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden char and kokanee or freshwater salmon. Although fishing is good throughout the year, peak seasons are spring and fall, out of tourist season. At these times, anglers appreciate the solitude and access to accommodations and other facilities. Warning: newbies, be aware of the strong afternoon winds that come up on the lake. Strathcona Provincial Park Nearby Strathcona Provincial Park, the oldest and largest park of its kind on Vancouver Island, presents abundant fishing opportunities. Numerous small lakes in the Forbidden Plateau area provide good summer fishing for rainbow trout. Freshwater Catches Buttle Lake - the largest freshwater lake in the park - Megin River and Megin Lake promise excellent rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden char fishing. For the angler with a hankering to get away from it all, it's earthly paradise. Winter Fishing In the Comox Valley winter, the prize is steelhead trout from the Stamp River. Pontoon boats take to the lakes in pursuit of the cutthroat, a round-snouted trout prized for its deep orange flesh and super flavour. Guided Fishing Trips Island Sportfishing Adventures based in nearby Courtenay offers guided steelheading adventures on the Stamp River. Peak season is Dec through April. The company also provides pontoon boats and inflatables for lake fishing, enabling anglers to fish pristine lakes and other hard-to-reach destinations. Fishing Bait & Tackle Fishing bait and tackle is available at the Cumberland General Store. Also in nearby Courtenay at Gone Fishin', Tyee Marine & Fishing Supplies and Buzz Bomb & Zzinger Lures Ltd.
