Ashcroft offers access to both river fishing at the Thompson River and lake fishing at Loon Lake and other lakes in the area. The Thompson River has one of the most significant Steelhead Salmon runs in British Columbia. Area lakes have both Rainbow trout and Kokanee populations. Many area lakes are also serviced by all-inclusive fishing resorts.
Loon Lake
Loon Lake is a long (14km/9mi) narrow fishing lake, well stocked with Rainbow trout and Kokanee. It is one of a few remaining naturally stocked lakes in British Columbia. Rainbow trout can weigh up to 1.4kg/3lb. Catches of 30.5cm/12in to 40.6cm/16in are not uncommon. To reach Loon Lake, which has a boat launch, turn north at the Trans-Canada Highway/Highway 97 and drive for 21km/13mi to Loon Lake road, turn right and follow it for 18 km/11mi to the lake.
Fishing Resorts
Evergreen Fishing Resort, on the south end of Loon Lake, has log cabins along the lakeshore, RV hookups, and camping areas. Tucked into the quiet solitude of Loon Lake's northern shore, White Moon Resort features cabins, shaded RV sites, and a boat launch and wharf. Nearby Marigold Resort is a lakeside family vacation spot with rental cabins, RV sites, and a campground. Marigold is 24km/15mi from the Highway 97 turnoff, between Cache Creek and Clinton. Hi Hium Lake Fishing Resort rests on the edge of Hi Hium Lake south of Loon Lake. The resort has 14 fully equipped summer cottages and cabins along the lakeshore, boats and motors, and a resident camp attendant. To reach the resort take the Loon Lake turnoff from Highway 97 for 17 km/11mi to a well signed rustic office at the Loon Lake/Hi Hium Lake junction. Transportation over a scenic 16km/11mi long private road is provided from here.
