Creston Bird Watching & Sanctuaries

When migratory birds fly south for the winter, they follow the best possible route for accessing food and appropriate habitat. In British Columbia, the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is on a flyway second in volume only to the coastal route – with more than 100,000 migrating water birds visiting each year. For visitors, this translates into incredible birdwatching opportunities.

Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

Twice a year, exotic Tundra Swans touch down in the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area to refuel and rest, but many other species also call the area home. In fact, there are almost 300 varieties of birds here, along with numerous species of mammal, fish, amphibian, and reptile. Many are considered species at risk.

The area, which has been designated as an internationally significant wetland (Ramsar Site), is not only a spectacular resource for birdwatchers and naturalists, but also a fascinating, informative, and entertaining place for anyone that has an interest in nature. It is affordable and hard to equal for a family outing.

Visiting the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area

At the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area explore the exhibits at the Interpretive Centre, followed by a guided voyageur canoe tour of the marshes. In addition to helping navigate the waterways, the tour guide will also explain the nuances of this fragile wetland ecosystem, and help identify the many types of wildlife living both above and below the water.

The Interpretive Centre is open May through October. For the rest of the year, the extensive trail system facilitates access to the 7000ha/17000ac wetland area for hiking. An observation tower near the main entrance provides an excellent platform for wildlife viewing and photography. The Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area is located 11km/7mi west of Creston off Highway 3. Watch for signage along the winding road leading to the Interpretive Centre.

Contact the Creston Visitor Centre for more information about the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area and other birdwatching opportunities.
