 Rodeo, calf roping
Music, theatre, film, sports, food, wine - there's a festival for every occasion in Northern British Columbia. Some of the region's biggest events are unique in the way they celebrate local history and culture. From the agricultural theme of the Bulkley Valley Exhibition, to a trip back in time at the Huble Homestead or catching bands at the Edge of the World Music Festival, you'll be spoilt for choice.
Agriculture is king at this non-profit, four-day fair held in late August and preceded by a festive parade. Over 20,000 people come each year to see livestock, horse and dog shows, take rides at the Midway fairground and root for their favourite cowboy at the (BCRA sanctioned) rodeo. Events include saddle bronc, steer wrestling, and the wild cow milking contest, so grab a seat and hold on tight.
This early 1900s heritage site is situated at the south end of the historic Giscome Portage on the banks of the scenic Fraser River. Huble Homestead recreates a bustling community that served as a farm, a trading post, a guide & freight operation, and a stop for the riverboats. The First Nations Fish Camp, sponsored by the Lheidli T’enneh, depicts a traditional Carrier summer fish camp and features a hand-carved dug-out canoe. Costumed interpreters are at the site from May to October.
"Fantastic people, amazing scenery, and a brilliant lineup - a unique and unforgettable experience on the Canadian Festival scene!" (Todd Butler, performer). This annual, three-day music festival is held in July on the Queen Charlotte Islands. Expect eclectic performances, stalls selling arts and crafts and food, as well as workshops for kids. If you’re feeling fit, sign up for the marathon race held during the festival weekend.
