Have fun learning about everything from stars to starfish at Victoria's science & nature attractions. At Centre of the Universe, you can study the stars and the planets through shows, exhibits and nighttime stargazing. The world of bugs beckons at Victoria Bug Zoo and Victoria Butterfly Gardens, while the world beneath the waves awaits at Pacific Undersea Gardens. What's more, at Mineral World, you can learn about rocks, minerals and fossils, then pan for gold, trawl for tropical seashells or sift through semi-precious stones.
Centre of the Universe
Stirred by sight of the stars at night? Just think what they'd look like through a 42-tonne (46-ton) telescope!
With its planetarium, interactive exhibits and knowledgeable staff, Centre of the Universe is a great place to learn about the stars and planets as well as to become even more appreciative of a starry, starry night.
Victoria Bug Zoo
One of the most popular attractions in downtown Victoria is crawling with bugs! See giant walkingsticks and glow-in-the-dark scorpions. Learn about the macabre mating ritual of alien-eyed praying mantids. Watch ants hard at work at Canada's largest ant farm. Knowledgeable "bug guides" will answer your questions and help you safely handle some of the creepy crawlies.
Pacific Undersea Gardens
At Pacific Undersea Gardens, you descend 5 m (15 ft) below the surface of the Inner Harbour to see thousands of marine animals and plants in a natural but protected environment. Live dive shows in the underwater theatre are narrated by both tour guides and divers, who use underwater communications equipment to interact with visitors during the show.
Victoria Butterfly Gardens
The moist, fragrant air of Victoria Butterfly Gardens is alive with bird calls and shot through with the vivid colour of butterflies, about 2,000 at any given time. Butterflies can be viewed at all stages of their life cycle: from caterpillar to chrysalis to fully-formed, winged beauty.
Mineral World
A family-oriented, hands-on facility, Mineral World makes learning about Earth Science fun. Feel free to explore rocks, minerals, crystals and fossils with both fingers and eyes in the Interpretive Centre.
The Scratch Patch is a popular outdoor feature. It contains two gold panning pools, a pond filled with tropical shells and piles of semi-precious gemstones.
