Thompson Okanagan's warm, dry weather lends itself to outdoor sports; events, both amateur and professional, are usually well attended. The calibre of the region's ski resorts and golf courses is such that they host many major ski, snowboard and golf events throughout their respective seasons. Thompson Okanagan's large cattle ranching industry fuels exciting rodeo events that include: Canadian Pro Rodeo in Princeton (May); Cowboy Festival & Wild West Show in Vernon (July); Pro Rodeo Day in Merritt (September); and the Annual Top Hand Competition in Cache Creek (September). The longest-standing Ironman race in continental North America is hosted by the city of Penticton each August, while a number of communities have British Columbia Hockey League (a division of the Canadian Junior "A" Hockey League) teams.
