The numerous farms and orchards that thrive within and throughout the surrounding area attest to Kelowna's deep-rooted agricultural heritage, which dates back thousands of years to the First Nations' use of the fertile land. Today fresh farm produce is readily available in Kelowna, with many restaurants sourcing local goods for seasonally changing menus. Several farms and orchards offer a close look at Kewlona's diverse farming culture (however, months of operation do vary).

Kelowna Land & Orchard

Climb aboard a tractor-drawn wagon at the 61ha/150ac Kelowna Land & Orchard for a guided tour among the apple trees. Shop for a variety of apples, fresh pressed apple juice, local preserves, and baked goodies at the Farm Store, or sample premium ciders produced on site at Raven Ridge Cidery. As well, the kids will love the petting zoo.

Carmelis Goat Cheese Artisan

Meet the goats, watch the milking, learn the intricacies of crafting fine goat cheeses, visit the aging cellar built right into the bedrock, and finally taste the results at Carmelis. Set among the ponderosa pines on a steep mountainside above Okanagan Lake, Carmelis features 20 or more goat's milk cheeses. Try Goatgonzola (a goat's milk gorgonzola), Goat Gruyere, or traditional Chevry.

Okanagan Lavender

Lavender Fields - Tourism Kelowna Take a deep breath and reap the benefits of 60 varieties of lavender spread across 1.6ha/4ac of farmland overlooking Okanagan Lake. With the aid of a self-guided tour booklet, stroll along rows and rows of lavender. The farm also features a kitchen garden and apothecary garden. During Lavender Discovery Days (July/August), learn about lavender harvesting, herbal tea preparation, and distillation of essential oils.

Falcon Ridge Farms

Duck in Kelowna, Laurie Carter Falcon Ridge Farms provides a rather unusual farm experience. Check out the animal farm where llamas, goats, heritage turkeys, rabbits, ducks, peacocks, and hens rule the roost. Walk among the ponds and creeks of the perennial gardens that in July abound with pink Echinacea. A wide variety of edible and medicinal Echinacea products are available at the General Store.

Oyama Lake Alpaca Farm

Call ahead to book a tour of the Oyama Lake Alpaca Farm (20 minutes north of Kelowna). Meet the alpacas, view demonstrations of textile spinning and weaving, and shop for alpaca clothing and accessories made in the Thompson Okanagan.

Farmer's Markets

Roadside produce stands are a common sight around Kelowna. Check out the Pioneer Country Market in Kelowna, Gatzke's Farm Market in Lake Country, and Paynter's Market in West Kelowna. Kelowna's Farmers' & Crafters' Market is the largest of its kind in British Columbia.
