Awards and accolades for the Thompson Okanagan's wineries and vineyards keep coming in: after Frommer's named it a Top Travel Destination for 2007, Sherman's Travel has named the Okanagan Valley one of the Top 10 Places to Go in 2008.
What makes Thompson Okanagan so special for wines? A majority of the wineries and vineyards in British Columbia are located in the Okanagan Valley, which has an ideal climate for grape growing. There are four distinct seasons here and ample sunshine. In fact, the southern end of BC’s Okanagan Valley enjoys 220 days of sunshine per year! T he northern part of the Okanagan Valley has soil of clay and gravel while the southern portion has deep sandy soils. The area south of Oliver is known as the Golden Mile due to the high concentration of quality wineries found here. The majority of BC's wineries and vineyards nestled in this lovely valley - there were about 95 wineries at last count.Learn more about BC's wineries and vineyard businesses .
Types of Wines in the Thompson Okanagan Common varietals in this region include Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Gewurztraminer, Bordeaux varieties and Syrah. Fruit wines are becoming more and more popular offering a number of varietals made from apricots, black currants and Fuji apples.
Wine history in the Okanagan The Thompson Okanagan region is also the oldest wine-producing region in British Columbia (Calona Vineyards was established here in 1932) with some of the most interesting and diverse wineries. Visitors can experience large, impressive tasting rooms, smaller, more intimate settings or winery restaurants, many of which are surrounded by lush vineyards and offer grand views. Drop-in guests are usually welcome to sample (many wines are award winners) and tour and learn about the process. Some wineries are open year-round for tours and tastings, however, most wine-related activities occur spring through autumn. Check with the vineyards first if you're planning to visit "off-season".
Wine festivals also take place in the Okanagan all year long. Some of these include:
Okanagan Spring Wine Festival , May 1-10, Okanagan Valley
Okanagan Summer Wine Festival , Aug 7 - 9, Silverstar Mountain Resort
Okanagan Fall Wine Festival , Oct 2 – 12, Okanagan Valley
Okanagan Icewine Festival , Jan 13-18 (2009), Sun Peaks Resort
Festival of the Grape , Oct 5, Oliver
