Few things stir the senses and the imagination like a live performance. Victoria offers plenty of options for experiencing music, theatre or dance in the company of other enthusiasts. Symphony, ballet, theatre and stand-up comedy are just the beginning, so grab a program, slip into your seat and enjoy the show!

Symphony

One of Canada's finest full-time professional ensembles, the Victoria Symphony has been performing for over 60 years. The Royal Theatre, its home setting, is a beautiful and historic landmark that features original Rococco/Renaissance-style décor in its auditorium. Performances are broken down into categories: Legacy, Signature, Odyssey, Classics, Pops, Great Music Events and Kids' Concerts.

Most of the Victoria Symphony's performances take place in downtown Victoria, within walking distance of the Inner Harbour.



Dance

Dance lovers enjoy a steady diet of ballet, jazz, modern, salsa, folk and more in the halls and theatres of Victoria. Ballet Victoria is a young, classically trained ballet company that performs contemporary and children's works in addition to traditional ballets. The company mounts performances throughout the year at festivals and celebrations.



Live theatre

In Victoria, you can see superb live shows throughout the year in a variety of venues, from grand auditoriums to tiny community theatres. The McPherson Theatre stages the city's widest variety of live performances in an 814-seat auditorium, while the Belfry Theatre, once an old church, stages comedies, dramas and musicals in a more intimate setting.

The "Mac" is located in downtown Victoria. The Belfry is a 10-minute drive from downtown.



Stand-up comedy

Stand-up comedy takes place in a number of clubs and venues throughout Victoria. You can see first-rate local and visiting comedians weekly at the Comedy Cellar, George & Dragon Pub and James Bay Inn. Generally, entrance fees are payable at the door on the day of a performance.

The Comedy Cellar is located in downtown Victoria. The George & Dragon Pub is a 10-minute drive from downtown; the James Bay Inn five minutes away by car.



Musical concerts

Victoria offers musical entertainment to suit every taste year round. In addition to the Victoria Symphony, the city has a highly regarded opera company and wonderful music festivals as well as regular choral performances and singular musical events. Professional concerts are held at both the McPherson and Royal Theatres. The 1,434-seat Royal Theatre is the home of both the Victoria Symphony and Pacific Opera Victoria. The Philip T. Young Recital Hall at the University of Victoria hosts the Victoria Summer Music Festival, a chamber music concert series. Christ Church Cathedral is a popular venue for choral music.
