Easily one Gabriola Island's most original theatrical venues is the Roxy Cultural Club and Lounge, a snazzy, state-of-the-art theatre. It boasts 50 red velvet seats, a flamboyant Art Deco look and a 3.96m/13ft screen.
Roxy Cultural Club & Lounge
It screens movies - classic movies, B movies, movies for children, often a roll down memory lane - and hosts live theatre productions, concerts and solo performances. The theatre itself is a must-see even without sitting through Tremors or Highlander another time.
No Bells & Whistles Club
It's no surprise that an island celebrated for its arts community should get around to theatre. The Gabriola Theatre Centre is home for the No Bells & Whistles Club, the theatrical company founded and helmed by award-winning film and TV actor, Antony Holland. It produces roughly 20 plays a year.
Gabriola Theatre Festival
The Gabriola Theatre Festival in August was an instant hit, selling out before it began on its first season in 2009. Now that's applause. The Festival boasts up to eight full-scale theatrical productions from comedy and satire to drama and fantasy. It also encompasses StreetArt, a largest-ever showing of works by more than 50 of Gabriola's visual artists, writers, poets, musicians and artisans. Every artist displaying is in attendance. Art lovers get to explore their passions up close and personal. StreetArt takes place on the festival Saturday on Lochinvar Lane. Other related events range from the Gabriola Lions' Pancake Breakfast for charity to an outdoor stage where locals and roving professionals can seize the mike and hit the high notes between "big tent" theatrical performances. Expect the unexpected.
