Heritage Park Museum, Terrace JF Bergeron photo
Northern BC's museums evoke the rich and vibrant history of the region. At Hudson's Hope, you'll find one of the richest deposits of dinosaur footprints in the world. In Terrace, you can visit a park-like museum that authentically depicts the lives of Terrace settlers in the early 20th century. The Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum celebrates the days of steam and diesel rail travel. Aboriginal history is evoked in the magnificent, natural splendour of the Haida Heritage Centre at Qay’llnagaay.
Hudson's Hope Museum/Peace Canyon Dam
Some of the best examples of fossilized footprints in North America are housed in this museum. Artifacts on display include a portion of the conveyor belt that transported glacial moraine used to construct the WAC Bennett Dam.
In the Peace Canyon Dam Visitor Centre you'll find the world's oldest bird footprints and two life-sized models of duck-billed dinosaurs.
Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum
The Prince George Railway & Forestry Museum is home to one of the largest vintage rail collections in BC. As you meander through the 3-ha (8-ac) indoor/outdoor facility, take a ride on the mini-train Cottonwood Express or explore locomotives, rail cars, and restored railway station. Artifacts from the steam and diesel railway eras include a steam-operated crane.
Huble Homestead
Just north of Prince George on Highway 97 is one of Northern BC’s several living museums. Huble Homestead was founded in the early 1900s when paddle wheelers still plied the waters of the Fraser River, opening the north to trade. Tour guides, dressed in authentic period costume, lead visitors through the once bustling homestead grounds and the summer season includes special events and live demonstrations.
Haida Heritage Centre
The Haida Heritage Centre at Qay’llnagaay on Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) showcases the unique art and history of the Haida First Nation, celebrating a living culture dating back some 12,000 years. Six monumental cedar totem poles carved by Haida artists stand in front of a row of longhouses, which span the length of the beach and are connected by interior walkways and atrium space. Features of the centre include the Haida Gwaii Museum, a gift shop, canoe house, carving shed, performing house and a small café. Information and orientation for visitors to Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Haida Heritage Site is also available at the centre.
Museum of Northern BC
Visitors enter this Prince Rupert museum through its impressive longhouse lobby. Exhibits take you through 10,000 years of Northern BC history, dating back to the end of the ice age. You can also observe some of the best carvers of the Northwest Coast at the First Nations Carving Shed.
The Exploration Place Science Centre & Museum
Young and old will find something of interest at The Exploration Place Science Centre & Museum in Prince George. Situated on the banks of the Fraser River, the centre features hands-on exhibits that invite you to interact with the displays. Step into the SimEx Theatre where riders experience simulated adventures in a learning environment combined with high-tech visuals and moving pods.
You can also view exhibits on tree species, paleontology, First Nations and Prince George's heritage.
Heritage Park Museum
A walking tour of Terrace's Heritage Park Museum will take you back to a quieter and simpler life in Northern BC. Eight historic log buildings depict the lives of some of the early settlers, including homesteaders, trappers and the men hired by Dominion Telegraph to build and maintain the telegraph lines.
Planning a Museum VisitMake sure to check your museum destination's hours of operation. Several of Northern BC's museums close or change their hours during the winter months.
