Vernon Murals

Vernon Post Office Mural - Don Weixl
Vernon Post Office Mural, Don Weixl photo
Vernon walls speak. In 26 murals they tell of a rich history – of pioneering spirit, cattle ranchers and apple orchards, sternwheelers and a rowboat ferry, steam locomotives and a homemade airplane, world wars and peace keeping, First Nations and multiculturalism.

Walk the downtown streets and the stories are all around in paintings that cover the sides of buildings and run as long as a city block.

The Murals Project

Not only do the murals tell a story, but they are a story in themselves. Under the direction of lead artist Michelle Loughery, these works were completed by youth at risk as part of a government employment and life skills program. Most of the young people had no idea about art before they started, but the project changed many lives.

In a truly happy ending/great beginning story, two of the artists, Tyler Toews and Steven Skolka, have started a mural company of their own and were commissioned to complete the most recent work, Sovereign Lake.

Self-Guided Tours

Maps for self-guided tours are available at the Downtown Vernon Association office at 3101 29th St, in the old CPR train station. For a more informed tour, rent an MP3 player for a guided audio tour or join a conducted group tour during July and August, Monday to Friday. Off-season tours are available by calling ahead to book a Conductor (250-542-5851). Check times when booking – there are usually two morning and one afternoon tours.
