Kitamaat Village (about a 20-minute drive east of Kitimat), where most Haisla First Nations people in the Kitimat District live, is home to Haisla Tourism, which offers various wildlife, hot spring, and adventure tours. Each tour, led by a local guide, includes a cultural component such as a brief overview of Haisla culture and history. Tours also include a freshly caught seafood meal of crab or salmon served on the beach. Also located in the Kitimat District, Douglas Channel Tours offers similar cultural excursions.
Wilderness & Wildlife Tours
Spend a few hours, a day or several days and nights in the wilderness surrounding the traditional Haisla territory. Discover the wild forest and clear blue waters of the Kitlope Conservancy, the world's largest undeveloped coastal temperate rainforest; soak and relax for an afternoon in Bishop Bay or Shearwater hot springs; or view bears, wolves, otters, eagles, swan, ducks, sea lions and ravens, maybe even whales, in their natural environment.
Canoe Tours
One of the most active Haisla Tourism tours involves participants paddling a traditional style ocean-going canoe through ocean channels of varying widths as tour guides talk about the surroundings and tell local stories. Except for a couple of trail walking tours, all Haisla tours are conducted on the water in the Douglas Channel, allowing participants to experience the enduring calmness and natural beauty of the area. All of the Haisla Tourism tours leave from MK Bay Marina, located just before Kitamaat Village on the south side of Kitamaat Road. Tours are mainly offered from May to October with a couple of hot spring and fishing tours in December. Although they are scheduled, groups with a minimum number of people can book at their own convenience.
Boat Tours
Douglas Channel Tours offers guided boat tours to Jesse Falls, a 10m/32.8ft high freshwater falls that spills into the ocean and is accessible by boat only. The company also offers short one- or two-hour tours of the town, visiting attractions including local marine facilities. Douglas Channel Tours leave from Moon Bay Marina, which is at the most southern tip of town past the Rio Tinto Alcan smelter.
