You'll find an abundance of studios, galleries and shops throughout this region, making it easy to satisfy your creative tastes.

View the indigenous and classic collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Visit the fine art galleries of Vancouver's South Granville neighbourhood. Make sure to get to Granville Island and Bowen Island, both havens for artisan studios and showrooms. First Nations and regional art are well-represented along the Sunshine Coast, while you'll find a diverse selection of local, regional, and First Nations art in New Westminster and Port Moody.

Granville Island



Granville Island's cluster of galleries and working studios celebrates local and regional artisans: clothing and jewellery designers, glass blowers, painters, potters, weavers, furniture makers and other artistic souls. You can even take a peek at artisans hard at work in their studios in transformed warehouses.

South Granville Rise

South Granville Rise and its array of approximately 25 galleries welcome both the serious collector and fascinated window shopper. In fact, this area is such an art lover's haven that locals refer to the vicinity as "Gallery Row."

Small galleries showcasing fine art, photography, First Nations' work and select antiques dot the strip between chic shops and eclectic restaurants.

Bowen Island

Picturesque Bowen Island is just a stone's throw from Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. In 20 minutes, you are transported to an enclave that serves as home and workspace for over 400 artists. The arts and crafts available on Bowen Island range from metal and wood sculpture to furniture, pottery, jewellery and even violins. Galleries are scattered around this charming island, making it a delightful place to spend a day or two. The area's weekend market in Snug Cove is beloved by visitors and locals alike.

Gibsons and area

Visitors have long been a common sight in this area thanks to its being the location of the long-running hit TV series, The Beachcombers. Today, the scenic 45-minute ferry ride transports flocks of art enthusiasts looking to browse shops and studios. While Artworks Tours offers guided gallery tours, some of the Gibsons area's many popular galleries include: Gibson's Landing Gallery, an artist's co-operative showcasing local paintings, pottery and sculpture; Gift of the Eagle Gallery, which features an array of fine art, including sculpture, pottery and Aboriginal works; Westwind Gallery and Framing, which displays Canadian artists; and Elements, a gallery that represents the work of over 50 local artisans.

Gibsons can be reached from the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal in West Vancouver.


Sechelt

Considered the cultural centre of the Sunshine Coast, Sechelt's populated arts community includes artists, artisans, writers and musicians. The area boasts a multitude of eclectic studios, galleries and shops, including: Sunshine Coast Arts Centre, a public gallery that promotes the work of local and off-coast artists; tems swiya (Our World) Museum showcasing an array of historical artifacts and artworks of the local Sechelt Nation; and Flying Anvil Studio, which represents the work of over 45 local artisans.

Sechelt is located 25 minutes northwest of Gibsons, making it easy to visit both areas on the same gallery-hopping excursion.

New Westminster

The historic town of New Westminster overlooks the Fraser River from its hillside perch. Its quaint streets contain an array of impressive galleries, showcasing the works of some of Canada's finest talent. Art connoisseurs of all types spend a day roaming the studios and shops of this cozy town, stopping occasionally to sip a latté and indulge in a bit of people-watching.

Some of New Westminster's many popular galleries include: Van Dop Gallery, which features a variety of mixed-media pieces from over 100 Canadian artists; Joseph Plaskett Gallery, which focuses on the art of Western Canada and Washington State; Amelia Douglas Gallery at Douglas College, which shows both the works of local artists and the college's collection; the Public Library Gallery, where exhibits range from photography and sculpture to watercolours and oils; as well as the Art Gallery in the Park, showcasing works by both new and established artists in scenic Queens Park.

New Westminster is a 30-minute drive east of Vancouver.

Port Moody

Long touted as the City of the Arts, Port Moody is home to studios, shops and galleries whose collections inside are rivaled only by the views of the North Shore Mountains outside.

Some of Port Moody's many popular galleries include: Port Moody Arts Centre and Blackberry Gallery, which hosts nearly 50 exhibits each year; Lone Cypress Gallery, a showcase for contemporary collections of paintings, wood, pottery and fibre art by local and regional artists; as well as Rocky Point Art Gallery and Studios, which integrates artists' studio space within a gallery setting.

Port Moody is a 40-minute drive east of Vancouver via Route 7A.
