Qualicum Beach Artists & Art Galleries

The Old School House - Oceanside Tourism/Cliff Craven
The Old School House, Oceanside Tourism/Cliff Craven photo
Hundreds of inspired hobbyists and a handful of world-class artisans reside in Qualicum Beach and the surrounding region. Big names include potter Larry Aguilar and glassblower Ted Jolda (whose reputation skyrocketed after two of his amber pears were featured in O, The Oprah Magazine.

Art in a Heritage Schoolhouse

The focal point of the arts community is the Old School House Arts Centre (122 Fern Rd. West near Qualicum Foods). Masterfully restored, the 1914 schoolhouse (known locally as TOSH) is now home to resident painters, silversmiths, potters, photographers and other fine artists who work in open-door studios. Ask questions! They're happy to chat about their art.

A full schedule of art classes is offered at TOSH year-round, including a popular summer program for children. Three galleries in the complex host regular exhibitions. And the centre's small theatre features classical and jazz concerts, notably the Music On Sunday series and a Tuesday afternoon jazz session (4:30 to 6 pm).

Grand Prix d'Art Painting Race - Old School House Arts Centre/Sandy Gray

One highlight of the arts calendar: The Grand Prix d'Art Painting Race. Since 1994, dozens of artists take to the streets of Qualicum Beach on the last Saturday of July and capture colourful slices of the town's character. The paintings (which must be completed within three hours) are available for sale on the same day.

Artists and Home Studios

An annually updated guide to the whereabouts of a score of artists and their home studios is available at the Visitor Centre. Use it to criss-cross the region on a personal arts tour. Or park the car in Qualicum Beach and shop locally.

The volunteer-run TOSH Gallery Shop offers the best one-stop browsing in town. Jewellery, ceramics, fibre arts, sculpture, paintings and specialty cards are sold in a bright, airy retail space.

"Folk art, fashion, furniture and fun" is the siren's call of Smithford's 'Island Time' Gallery (164 West 2nd Ave.). This popular shopper's haunt can be identified by a  courtyard packed with local resident Don Thompson's whimsical folk art creations – stalwart Mounties, comic farm animals and fence-sitting cats included. The work of some 75 other BC artists is also featured in this unique, proudly kitschy emporium.
