British Columbia is a rich amalgam of cultures and traditions. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is home to a mosaic of cultures that include citizens of Aboriginal, European and Asian descent. As you head north and east, you see the indelible impressions that pioneers and Aboriginals have made on the land.

There are nearly 200 First Nation bands in British Columbia  - an astounding number for one province alone! Each preserve and share their own culture and history through museums, events and visitor experiences, so be sure to weave your way through the province's rich tapestry when you visit.

Make time for guided tours through reconstructed boomtowns, check out fascinating museums and exhibits and learn about the cultural and history of a particular council or band or in a visit to an Aboriginal village.

Asian influence

You can also learn about BC's Asian immigrant history and how these settlers contributed so greatly to the province. There are a number of events, sights and museums to explore here, particularly if you plan to visit Vancouver (home to North America's second-largest Chinese community) and Victoria, as well as other key cities and communities in our six regions.

Whatever cultural experience you happen upon, it's bound to be fascinating.

The Four Host Nations, Cultural Olympiad and the 2010 Winter Games

The Lil’wat, Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations groups form "The Four Host First Nations", and will participate in, and be closely involved with, the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Find out more about the Four Host First Nations.

There is also The Cultural Olympiad, held in January/February 2009 and 2010, which will celebrate the province and country's diverse cultural mix through music, art, dance and theatre.
