Kimberley Mining

Kimberley Underground Mining Railway - Chris Andrews
Kimberley Underground Mining Railway, Chris Andrews
Kimberley has a long and successful mining history that goes back almost 100 years and visitors are invited to share in the experiences and local history through a number of mining-related attractions.

Mining History and the Underground Railway

In1892, prospectors laid claim to the North Star, (the mountain where Kimberley Alpine Resort now sits) and nearby Stemwinder and Sullivan mining areas.  Of these three claims staked, the Sullivan was the most productive and eventually became the largest lead and zinc mine in the world.

The fascinating history from this mining era has been well preserved at Kimberley's local museum. Visitors of all ages will be captivated with a trip to the Sullivan Mine and Kimberley's Underground Mining Railway. The train ride enters a 198m/650ft tunnel to the underground Interpretive Centre where visitors learn about hard rock mining.  Displays and an interactive mining show provide a truly authentic experience. Be sure to visit the Orpheum Theatre, North Star School House and the Kimberley Caboose.

Cominco Gardens

The Sullivan Mine was owned by Cominco (now Teck Cominco), and produced Elephant Brand fertilizer. To showcase the benefit of their wares, Cominco created beautiful Cominco Gardens. Later, the gardens were given as a gift to the City of Kimberley. With thousands of flowers blooming each year, it is a popular attraction. The gardens are located within minutes of the downtown Platzl.

Fort Steele

Fort Steele Carriage - David GlunsFor a perspective on what life was like at the time of the miners, stroll the wooden sidewalks of Fort Steele Heritage Town, located 40km/28mi southeast of Kimberley. This restored 1890s pioneer boomtown is a living time capsule. Guests can enjoy train rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, watch live theatre performances, pan for gold or explore original and recreated buildings and items from that era.
