Vancouver features some of the best and most accessible mountain biking of any city on the continent. Just minutes from the downtown core by SeaBus, bus or car, the famed North Shore lures riders from around the world with a host of challenging downhill and freeride opportunities. Less than half an hour's drive southwest of the city centre, Pacific Spirit Regional Park and the University Endowment Lands offer a network of leisurely cross- country trails through old-growth forest. North Shore The North Shore, so called because it sits on the northern shore of Vancouver's Burrard Inlet, is widely recognized as the birthplace of freeriding (a modern mountain biking discipline that combines downhill, dirt jumping and stunts etc). Its vast network of trails is mainly concentrated on and around Mount Seymour. Some of the world's most challenging trails are here – one of the reasons the area is regularly featured in mountain biking magazines and videos. There are many intermediate-level trails, but beginner and cross-country opportunities are limited.
Mount Seymour, Mount Fromm and Cypress Mountain Trails
Ned's Atomic Dustbin (intermediate) on Mount Seymour is one of the area's original and most popular trails, featuring a variety of man-made structures on a gentle slope. Also on Seymour, CBC (difficult) runs through old-growth forest and is one of the area's most beautiful — and challenging — rides. Minutes away, Mount Fromme and Cypress Mountain are both home to a wide assortment of popular intermediate and advanced trails. Eco-friendly Trail BuildingThe North Shore's environmentally sensitive trail building methods have received international attention, and "North Shore-style" trails — with stunt structures designed to protect nature as they provide challenge — are now being used in several US states and in countries around the world. Where and When to Go Mountain Biking in VancouverTrails on Vancouver's North Shore are all 20 to 40 minutes from downtown and are directly accessible from the suburbs of North Vancouver and West Vancouver. Some trails can be ridden year-round but the best time for riding is March through October. Mount Seymour Road provides access to many popular trails, but be aware that they don't loop back to the road. Biking Gear and Rentals: North Shore
With very few exceptions, North Shore trails are technically-demanding routes geared toward intermediate and advanced riders; be sure that both you and your bike are up to the challenge. Body armour and a full-face helmet are essential accessories that should be worn on all runs. Not all North Shore trails permit mountain biking; prospective riders should seek advice and direction from local bike shops before hitting the trails. Mountain and freeride bikes can be rented at various locations in North Vancouver and West Vancouver. Guided mountain bike tours of the North Shore are available from late spring to early fall. Pacific Spirit Regional ParkLocated within the University of British Columbia's Endowment Lands, Pacific Spirit Regional Park offers a forested haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Casual cyclists and cross-country enthusiasts alike will appreciate the park's 38 km (24 mi) of relatively flat dirt trails. Cross-Country Biking TrailsThe trails in and around 16th Avenue dish out only the occasional hill, but those looking for an uphill challenge can always access the trail network from the beaches of Spanish Bank below. Many of the trails are multi-use, so be prepared to share the trail with pedestrians, dogs and horseback riders. Cyclists are required to yield to both walkers and equestrians. Several of the trails are for foot traffic only, and there is heavier trail use on weekends. Where and When to Go Biking in Pacific Spirit Regional ParkWhile there are numerous entrances to the trails, first-time visitors are encouraged to begin their exploration at the Pacific Spirit Regional Park Centre, on 16th Avenue near the University of British Columbia. The trails are open year round, but be aware that they can be muddy during and after heavy rains. Biking Gear and Rentals: Pacific Spirit
Note that there are no bike rental shops in the park area, so bring your bicycle and helmet. Consult park information kiosks for trail updates, maps of designated routes, and additional safety information. Had a Great BC Biking Experience? We want to know about it!
