From ocean to meadow to forest to mountain, the Comox Valley offers five distinct areas of mountain biking trails for all levels of riders. Year-round trails near Comox Lake and along the Puntledge River represent some of the most varied and rewarding biking trails in BC. Stunning scenery, wildlife and unpredictability combine to enthral bikers. The Comox Lake-Puntledge River Trails constitute one of the largest mountain biking trail systems on Vancouver Island. Nine different trails start out at the dam on Comox Lake. All are notable for scenic beauty and a challenging variety of terrain.
Puntledge Plunge
The first road north, B21, after 15 minutes of uphill cycling, brings adventurers to the scary-sounding Puntledge Plunge. Those who accept the challenge learn why instantly as they soar into a near-vertical descent. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...
Nymph Falls
The 4.7km/2.9m Bear Bait Trail loops around the river and connects to rails in Nymph Falls Regional Park. Nymphs prove evasive, but the Falls, with the Puntledge River cascading over bedrock shelves into a deep pool, rarely disappoint. The adjacent rock terrace is a perfect picnicking site. In fall, it's an ideal lookout to see spawning salmon battle their way upstream.
Mount Washington
For a long, gentle but exciting ride, 1590m/5,216ft-high Mount Washington delivers the thrills. Mountain biking seasons usually begins by July 1 and extends through August. Catch the Blue chairlift to the top and spend the day descending into the Comox Valley. Biking is a principal component in the annual Comox Snow to Surf event from Mt. Washington to the ocean, held every spring for more than 20 years. The relay combines downhill skiing, XC skiing, running, mountain biking, road biking and canoeing. Whew. The town celebrates with a parade, evening party and beer gardens.
