Hiking is popular and accessible in Vanderhoof and the surrounding area. The rolling terrain offers great views of surroundings lakes and ranches. Vanderhoof offers easy and flat walking routes around town, as well as numerous short to full-day wilderness treks in the backwoods. Some of the longer trails start a few kilometers/miles from town, while others require a short drive. Hiking is best in late summer.

Greer Creek Falls Trail/Waterlily Bay Trails

Two of the more popular routes include 1.2 km/0.75mi-long Greer Creek Falls Trail and Waterlily Bay Trails. Greer Creek has an end destination waterfall, where hikers can take a refreshing dip, and a picnic area. The various hiking routes of Waterlily Bay Trails are close to town and feature two small lakes, several viewpoints, as well as the remnants of an old trapper cabin.

Highpoint Hiking Club

Local hiking guides are not available. However, joining the Highpoint Hiking Club on their weekly jaunts is a great opportunity to hike familiar routes with locals. The Highpoint Hiking group meets every Thursday evening between May and August at the parking lot of the Nechako Valley Secondary School. The group usually sticks to easy to moderate hikes in the area. Once or twice a month, on the weekend, they head out for an all-day hike venture into more difficult territory.

Hiking Maps and Information

Those interested in exploring on their own can pick up a Vanderhoof Area Hiking Trails brochure at the Vanderhoof Visitor Centre. The brochure provides directions and descriptions of several trails in the area. Highpoint Hiking Club schedules are also available at the Visitor Centre. Note: Hiking boots are best for longer treks but running shoes are okay for the easier routes.
