Guest and dude ranches in the Kootenay Rockies offer horseback riding on alpine trails, and outdoor adventure activities such as river rafting, hiking and fly fishing.
For an adventure ranch experience, head to Three Bars Ranch, voted "Canada's Best Family Dude Ranch" in 2010 by Rustic Vacations, an international-based ranch guide. Go horseback riding, wrangle some cattle, and then follow up a day in the saddle with white water rafting or mountain biking.
Bull River Guest Ranch and Beaverfoot Lodge offer more rustic ranch experiences, with pioneer-style accommodations and backcountry surroundings.
Horseback riding isn't the only draw at a guest/dude ranch. Go swimming, biking and canoeing or watch bareback riding at a nearby stampede or rodeo. Three Bars Ranch Three Bars Ranch offers something for the whole family. Rope, herd and wrangle with real cowboys and hit the trails for any length of time to explore high mountain terrain. Adults can finish the trip relaxing in the spa or in private, spacious log cabins, while kids can spend time swimming, biking or at the petting zoo. Rustic Ranches Bull River Guest Ranch is situated in the foothills of the spectacular Canadian Rockies. Breathe in mountain air, venture to backcountry lakes and admire the surroundings from atop a beautiful horse.
Cozy log cabins with wood-burning fireplaces and outdoor picnic tables round out the experience.
Beaverfoot Lodge is set on the outskirts of Yoho National Park near Golden. Navigate mountain trails, and then get adrenaline pumping on a rafting trip down the renowned Kicking Hose River. At night, "rough it" in a covered wagon to get a true feel for the pioneer spirit of the west!
