Thompson Okanagan has award-winning golf courses on varied terrain. With more than 50 courses offering panoramic mountain views, sage-covered desert terrain, a backdrop of orchards and vineyards or games that take you along meandering rivers or shimmering lakes, the opportunities in this region are endless. There’s a boom of new courses in this region, including the highly-acclaimed Tobiano – it was named “Best New Canadian Course” in 2008 by Golf Digest , the world’s leading golf publication. The wide variety of courses, designed by internationally-renowned architects like Les Furber, Michael Hurdzan, Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Fred Couples, provide a golf experience that is second to none.
Standout Courses and Accolades The high concentration of golf resorts and clubs in the Thompson Okanagan makes it easy for visitors to sample an array of award-winning courses. In 2007, Kelowna was named the “Best Canadian Golf City” by SCOREGolf , Canada’s largest golf magazine. Look to Gallagher’s Canyon in Kelowna for a quintessential Okanagan golf experience, or tee off at The Club at Tower Ranch , named one of the top new golf courses of 2008 by Travel Leisure Golf magazine. Mid-way between Kelowna and Vernon is Predator Ridge Golf Resort , consistently ranked a 4.5 star rating (2002-2008) as one of Golf Digest’s “Places to Play”. The resort was also host to the 2008 TELUS World Skins Competition that saw the likes of golf legends Greg Norman and Fred Couples. In Vernon, try The Rise, a recently opened Fred Couples Signature Course overlooking the shores of Okanagan Lake. Or play at a more historic club; the Salmon Arm Golf Club was established in 1928 and its links-style layout – located at the base of an extinct volcano – was ranked among the top 50 courses in Canada by SCOREGolf magazine (2008).
A round or two of golf can also be followed up with a relaxing spa or an all-inclusive tour at one of the regions more than 100 wineries and vineyards .
Golfing Skills and the Season All of the region's courses offer exceptional golfing experiences for players of all skill levels over an extended season (approximately March through November). A few things to remember for your visit or golf excursion: Tee times should be booked in advance of arrival, especially during July and August. Many courses have a dress code in effect. Check with the course or resort first so you know what to bring with you.
