Moderate climate and varied terrain combine to make Kelowna an excellent golf venue. Long dry summers and short winters extend the golfing season: Locals first appear at the driving range in March and are still teeing up in early- to mid-November. Flat creeksides, rolling orchards, arid grasslands, and forested mountainsides provide a range of challenges to golfers. Appropriate club selection is not the only big decision with more than a dozen 18-hole courses located within a 30km/18.6mi radius of downtown Kelowna. Championship Golf Courses Gallagher's Canyon – ranked among the top 50 courses in Canada by SCOREGolf , "Canada's Golf Magazine" – offers 27 holes of play divided between the 6802-yard par 72 Canyon Course and the challenging 9-hole par 32 executive Pinnacle Course. Ponderosa pines line the fairways, but take care to avoid the canyon rim – out of bounds balls are long gone. Golfing at Harvest Golf Club is perhaps best during Kelowna's springtime apple-blossom bloom. This hillside venue provides an 18-hole, par 72 challenge at 7109 yards. Count the Okanagan Lake views among the hazards.
Play and stay at the Okanagan Golf Club in the Borgata Lodge Hotel. The club's 6900-yard par 72 Bear Course was created by Nicklaus Designs and features dramatic play around man-made Lake McIvor. For a change of pace, tee up on the 6891-yard par 72 Les Furber designed Quail Course. Walkers, be prepared for dramatic elevation changes.
Par 71/72 Courses Locals have the inside scoop on even more par 71/72 courses in Kelowna. Forget the cart and walk the 18 holes at Shadow Ridge and Kelowna Springs . Both courses are flat, but risky with lots of water hazards. Get in a hike along with 18 holes at Sunset Ranch in Kelowna and Shannon Lake in West Kelowna. Both courses can wear players down with lots of elevation change. Black Mountain and The Club at Tower Ranch are the latest additions to the Kelowna golf scene. All of these venues feature pro shops and rentals. Shorter Courses Kelowna also scores with a number of mid-range golf courses. In the city, Mission Creek is a flat 3873-yard par 61, while Michealbrook Ranch is an easy walk 3799-yards par 63. Two Eagles Golf Course, located on the Westbank First Nations land west of Okanagan Lake, is a 4664-yard course rated par 63. Quick nine-hole courses are found at Aspen Grove, north of Kelowna.
