Both Pitt Meadows and neighbouring Maple Ridge offer excitement and relaxation for cyclists of all levels. Enjoy biking amid rugged terrain in the vast Golden Ears Provincial Park, or chill out while pedaling along the more than 48km/30mi of dykes that grace the low-lying regions near the Fraser River and Pitt River.
Cycling on the Dykes
Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge initiated a civic Bikeways Plan in 1994, and it's paid dividends today with great cycling routes in municipal and rural areas. That includes the famous dykes, easily accessible via peaceful roads and parkland surroundings.
Hawk Rotary Loop
A delightfully flat ride is available on the Hawk Rotary Loop, which encompasses about 17km/10.5 in western Pitt Meadows. Tree-lined trails and occasional wildlife sightings mark the dyke sections on the Fraser River and Pitt River, and views of grazing cows and planes taking off at the Pitt Meadows Regional Airport are other highlights. Other popular dyke routes include the Osprey Rotary Loop (11km/6.8mi), located on the north side of Pitt Meadows, and Blue Heron Rotary Loop (19km/11.8mi), offering bird watching and views of the Alouette River.
Serious Biking
For a solid intermediate-level ride, try Menzies Trail in Golden Ears Provincial Park. Featuring singletrack, doubletrack, and paved segments, the 18.3km/11mi trail offers a nice view of Alouette Lake in addition to thickly forested wilderness.
Lake Beautiful
Another option in the park is the Alouette Forest fire access trail, which delivers a stimulating 20km/12.4mi round-trip experience. Amid cedar, hemlock, and fir trees, ride up to check out the lily-pad tranquility of Lake Beautiful, and then enjoy an exciting, challenging descent. Closer to Maple Ridge, try the popular Blue Mountain area, featuring such rutted, dynamic routes as the Muzz and the Humphill Downhill.
The Woodlot
The Woodlot in Maple Ridge is infamously challenging, and recommended for experienced riders. Trails like Crazy Carpenter, Giant Killer, and Snakes and Ladder abound with jumps, ramps, logs, and other obstacles. The terrain compares favourably to North Vancouver – in other words, this is world-class. To get to the Woodlot, follow Dewdney Trunk Road through Maple Ridge and turn north on 287th Street, heading straight to the end.
Ridge Meadows BMX
As an alternative, BMX enthusiasts can view or participate in the excitement at Ridge Meadows BMX (17130 Barnes Rd) in Pitt Meadows. This volunteer-run track showcases a sport that gained official Olympic status in 2008. Navigate jumps and obstacles while competing with opponents in age-appropriate groups. Safety gear is a must (gloves, helmets, long sleeves, etc.).
