Lac La Hache Provincial Park, while swimmers flock to the lake's sandy beach. For a high-riding adventure, go on a trail ride at one of the area's guest ranches. You can also book a flight tour for a bird's-eye view of stunning
Helmcken Falls in Wells Gray Provincial Park or hop on a float plane to reach more remote lakes for
fly fishing, kayaking or
canoeing. 100 Mile House is also unique in that light aircraft can land on an airstrip located right in the community, at an elevation of 930 m (3051 ft), within walking distance of hotels and restaurants.
When it was completed in 1865, the Cariboo Waggon Road was called "the eighth wonder of the world," guiding prospectors to possible fortune. Today you can enjoy a leisurely drive along this scenic route. At the
108 Mile Heritage Site, visit seven heritage buildings that include a 1908 Clydesdale barn, the 105 Mile Roadhouse, a stagecoach barn, blacksmith shop and one-room schoolhouse. A short drive southeast takes you to Lone Butte, where you'll find the last standing wooden water tower for the Pacific Great Eastern Railway steam trains. The community's easy access to water made it a perfect place to top up steam locomotives in the early 1900s.
From early prospectors to renowned painters, arts and culture come alive in this region. Visit local galleries to see the works of First Nations and other professional artists. You'll see accomplished artistic creations from soapstone carvings to fine jewellery. Travel the historic Cariboo Waggon Road to steep yourself in gold rush history. You'll first see the only surviving stagecoach of the Barnard Express and Stage Line at 100 Mile House, where you can arrange a gold-panning tour. Next, drive north to visit the
108 Mile Heritage Site to see a variety of well-preserved heritage buildings. Other nearby stops include the Willowford School House, Felker Ranch and the 83 Mile Antique Equipment Museum, as well as the historic churches and old cemetery close to Clinton.
History and serenity are the feature attractions at 100 Mile House. Stroll the 12-ha (30-ac) green spaces of Centennial Park. Picnic on the banks of Bridge Creek, then follow a path upstream to where Bridge Creek Falls cascades over a face of ancient lava beds. See the only surviving stagecoach of the Barnard Express and Stage Line. Drive north to visit the 108 Mile Heritage Site to explore one of Canada's largest log barns.
The South Cariboo Arts and Cultural Society brings live local and international performances to the stage at Martin Exeter Hall. Drop by to see community plays, concerts, choirs and First Nations gatherings. There's even a Cowboy Poetry Concert. The community is also home to the 100 Mile House Bears, a Junior "B" men's hockey team which plays at the South Cariboo Recreation Centre.
Wildlife and natural splendours abound in and around 100 Mile House, which is a spring stop-over for migrating gulls, swans, ducks, geese, grebes and Trumpeter Swans. Take the walking trail that encircles the eight-ha (20-ac) marsh. Visit
Wells Gray Provincial Park northeast of 100 Mile House to explore 5,400 sq km (2,085 sq mi) of spectacular wildlife and wilderness as well as view one of Canada's highest waterfalls. Just south of 100 Mile House enjoy a panoramic view at the Mt. Begbie Forest Service Lookout. And don't miss the lava-layered canyon walls of
Chasm Provincial Park, a natural wonder created at the end of the last ice age.
Relax by the shores of the hundreds of lakes surrounding the 100 Mile House area. Many lakes have public beaches and there are dozens of lakeside resorts. In the southern Cariboo region,
Green Lake's shoreline of sand-pebble beaches and shallow, warm waters stretches 17 km (10.5 mi). The park's day-use and campground areas have roped-off swimming areas. The 108 Mile/Sepa Lakes area has two connected lakes with swimming beaches. A 9.2-km (5.7-mi) trail is popular for walking, biking, horseback riding or snowmobiling in winter. More than gold shines in and around historic 100 Mile House. With hundreds of sparkling lakes and countless rivers and streams, the scenic area is ideal for paddling and fishing. You can paddle the
Moose Valley Canoe Chain, spotting deer and Moose as you navigate a chain of 11 small lakes. You can also cast a line for trout or salmon along the world-renowned "
Fishing Highway," where over 100 lakes are located within an hour's drive of each other. This area is also home to the Interlakes' four destination lakes: Fawn, Sheridan, Bridge and Lac Des Roches.
If you love being outdoors in winter, 100 Mile House will have your heart racing. The cross-country skiing here is invigorating. You'll find more than 150 km (93 mi) of groomed cross-country trails in and around this community, some of which are lit at night. Downhill skiers can carve the slopes of Mt. Timothy northeast of 100 Mile House, where 32 runs and two terrain parks keep visitors coming back. You can also enjoy snowmobiling, dogsledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing or take horse-drawn sleigh rides.
