Join the Courtenay Museum as they take you on a guided fossil tour along the banks of the Puntledge River. Our friendly guide will begin at the Courtenay & District Museum & Palaeontology Centre with a short lecture & video, followed by visit to the exhibit gallery & concluding with a hands-on trip to the actual fossil sites. Every year from late April through May, flocks of sandpipers, plovers, whimbrels & many other shorebirds pass through the Tofino area. The combination of expansive mudflats & long sandy beaches create an ideal habitat for these migratory shorebirds. Thousands of shorebirds stop here stop to feed & rest – some for just 3 days – as they make their impressive journey from South & Central America northward to their Arctic breeding grounds. The Tofino Shorebird Festival is a weekend of walks, talks, guided birding & more.
