Fernie Alpine Resort says “Thank You” to local communities by offering a FREE day of skiing and riding to the residents of Fernie, Elko, Elkford, Jaffray, Sparwood and all residents living in the Elk Valley, as part of the annual Community Appreciation Day. Community members can also pick up a $2 BBQ voucher with proceeds from the BBQ going to charity. Please note: ID and proof of a local address (drivers licence, pay stub etc) will be required to acquire a complimentary lift ticket.

The Vancouver Polar Bear Swim Club is one of the largest and oldest Polar Bear Clubs in the world. Its initial swim was in 1920 when a small number of hardy swimmers took the plunge into English Bay on New Year's Day. Led by their founder, Peter Pantages, the swim has grown from around 10 swimmers in that year to the record number of 2,128 official entries in 2000. Today, the swim takes place at 2:30pm on the first day of each new year. Costumes and the Peter Pantages Memorial 100 yard swim race are the highlights of this event.

Skiers and snowboarders will slide in style at Fernie Alpine Resort's 7th annual Kinky Rail Jam. Open to both skiers and snowboarders, the annual rail competition will be set in a jam format so that each rider has a number of feature options. Competitors have a chance to win their share of a cash purse as well as great prizes. Overall talent and skill will help the judges choose their champions.
