On Big Rock Candy Mountain you can collect abundant crystals of colourful fluorite, barite & quartz, enjoying wildflowers & scenery. Keep the treasures you find on this wilderness adventure. Our crystals have been waiting 45 million years for your visit. Operated from 1916 to 1929, the mine provided fluorite for flux used in Cominco's Trail smelter. Today fluorite & barite crystals are highly prized by collectors. All collecting today is done outside the original mine with a certified tour guide anxious to share the colourful history hidden in the Monashee Mountain range, approximately 35 km north of the city.
