Squamish

spacer

Squamish (population: 14,949) is located at the north end of Howe Sound, about an hour north of Vancouver and about an hour south of the mountain resort community of Whistler. It sits at the mouth of the Squamish River and is surrounded by the dramatic, glaciated peaks of the Coast Mountains. It is a picture-postcard setting that has attracted many Hollywood moviemakers. Squamish claims to be the "Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada," and the list of outdoor activities offered here is indeed long. Windsurfing, rock climbing and mountain biking are the activities most readily associated with the Squamish area.

The Squamish area also has great historical and geographical attractions such as the West Coast Heritage Railway Park, BC Museum of Mining in Britannia Beach, Shannon Falls and the Stawanamus Chief - a large granite monolith famous for rock climbing.
