Smithers (population: 5,217) is located in Northern BC's fertile Bulkley Valley, midway between Prince Rupert and Prince George on Highway 16. The town lies at the foot of 2,589-m (8,494-ft) Hudson Bay Mountain, in the traditional territory of the Wet'suwet'en First Nation (People of the Lower Hills). Founded in 1913 as a divisional headquarters for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, its economy has since relied on agriculture, mining and tourism. A town for all seasons, Smithers makes a good base for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, fishing as well as skiing and snowmobiling.
