spacer

Sechelt (population: 8,454) is located on the Sunshine Coast, North of Roberts Creek. This is a temperate stretch of coastline that, while considered part of the BC mainland, is accessible only by vehicle ferry. The town sits on a narrow strip of land separating the Sechelt Inlet from the Strait of Georgia and is conveniently located at the geographic centre of the "Lower Sunshine Coast." Summers are warm and dry; winters are mild and moist.

Activities in Sechelt

Sechelt is best known for its vibrant artistic community, salmon fishing and ecotourism. Every summer, the Rockwood Centre plays host to the acclaimed Festival of the Written Arts.

The town is named after its early inhabitants, the shishhalh (Sechelt Nation). Visit the Hewhiwus (House of Chiefs) to learn more about this Aboriginal band. Explore their government offices, gallery, theatre and museum.

For outdoor types, Porpoise Bay Provincial Park is perfect. Northeast of Sechelt on the east side of the Sechelt Inlet, this park has a campsite, trails, popular interpretive nature programs and a wide sandy beach for swimming.

Sechelt Inlet has been named as one of the top 100 dive sites worldwide, and one of the world’s top 20 recreational dive sites by Rodale’s Scuba Diving magazine. It features artificial reef formed by the scuttled HMCS Chaudiere, a former Canadian Navy ship, off Kunechin point.
