New Westminster
New Westminster (population: 58,549) is located at the geographic centre of the Greater Vancouver Regional District, with easy access to
Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby and the Fraser Valley. This charming city overlooks the Fraser River, with stunning views of Golden Ears Mountain and Washington State’s Mount Baker. The downtown’s historic waterfront district is renowned for its sloping streets and heritage buildings, many of which were built from the late 1850s to the early 1890s. Indeed, the city’s roots go back to the 1850s and the discovery of gold on the Thompson River. New Westminster was incorporated in 1860, becoming western Canada's first city. When the province of British Columbia was formed in 1866, New Westminster was its capital, albeit briefly – in 1868, Victoria took over that honour.
