Lytton
Lytton (population: 235) sits at the north end of the celebrated Fraser Canyon, nestled on a series of benches where the Fraser and Thompson rivers meet. Lytton claims to be “Canada’s Hot Spot" due to sweltering summer temperatures that soar into the high 30s C (95–100º F).
Lytton is a major gateway to outdoor adventure. The town is also known as “The Rafting Capital of Canada”: Visitors can cool down on the Thompson and Fraser rivers, both renowned for whitewater rafting and kayaking. The Fraser is one of the world’s great salmon rivers as well, while in the fall, anglers pilgrimage to the area for the Thompson’s renowned steelhead run.
Close to town is Stein Valley Nlaka’pamux Heritage Park, one of BC’s premier areas for multi-day wilderness backpacking. It boasts approximately 150 km (93 mi) of trails and numerous wilderness campsites. Hiking the entire valley (eight or more days) will take you from BC’s dry interior to the wetter Coast Mountains.
No visit to Lytton is complete without a visit to Hell’s Gate. Visitors descend a stomach-defying 152 m (500 ft) on the airtram into the spectacular Fraser Canyon for a close-up view of waters rushing through the 35-m (1100-ft) wide gorge.
