Klemtu

The small coastal community of Klemtu (population: 450) draws nature lovers, sea kayakers, cultural and natural history buffs alike to its remote village splendour. The area boasts one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems on the planet.
Located on Swindle Island, in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, the
community was once a coastal fishing and trading centre. Today, the village thrives as the traditional home of the Kitasoo/Xaixais people who have inhabited the region for thousands of years.
Opportunities to tour the area by land and water abound. In addition to hiking, fishing and camping, visitors can paddle to explore old-growth forest, deep fjords, river estuaries, hidden inlets and bays, as well as beautiful beaches.
The diversity of wildlife in the Klemtu area is dramatic. Grizzly and black bears, wolves and a variety of marine life from whales to sea lions also call this area home. North of Klemtu, wildlife lovers journey to Princess Royal Island for a chance to spot the legendary white Kermode (Spirit) Bear.
And don’t miss Fiordland Recreation Area to gaze upon sheer granite cliffs and bountiful marine life. You can also catch salmon spawning in some of the area’s many coastal rivers and creeks.
