Hornby Island
Denman Island (population: 1,095) and Hornby Island (population: 1,074) lie just off the east coast of Vancouver Island. Both have large arts communities, scenic parks and beaches and exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities. Denman is just minutes from Vancouver Island by ferry and, because it's so accessible, tends to be somewhat busier than Hornby. It has three provincial parks, a public campground, a summer-only art gallery and a community hall that hops with music and theatre productions all year long. Hornby is more scenic and ecologically rich. Its shoreline is dotted with dramatic, sandstone rock formations and a startling array of marine wildlife – including rare, six-gill sharks – can be observed at a dive location just off its northern tip.

Denman Island is a 10-minute ferry ride from Buckley Bay, which is just south of Courtenay on Vancouver Island. From there, it’s a 10-minute drive to the ferry crossing for Hornby Island. The Denman-to-Hornby crossing also lasts 10 minutes. Both islands can be accessed via floatplane or private boat as well.
