Duncan (population: 4,986) lies near the heart of the Cowichan Valley, surrounded by vast tracts of unspoiled mountain, forest, and coastal wilderness. The city is a service hub in the Cowichan Valley, with numerous boutiques, and accommodation and dining options. Duncan is also a great starting point for touring valley wineries and provincial parks. For nature enthusiasts, the Pacific Northwest Raptors Visitor Centre (just North of Duncan) is dedicated to conserving birds of prey, offering demonstrations and hands-on courses. As well, the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Refuge, with more than 200 species, is recognized as a globally significant bird habitat. Aboriginal Culture in DuncanDuncan is a significant centre of First Nations heritage, featuring an acclaimed First Nations cultural centre, several First Nations art galleries. Often referred to as the "City of Totems," Duncan has close to 80 totems displayed prominently along the city's streets and walkways. Totems can e viewed on a self-guided walking tours.
