Ashcroft
The Village of Ashcroft (population: 1,664), on the Thompson River, was once a major hub on the Gold Rush Trail. Still a gateway to the Cariboo and the North, it’s a popular supply and stopover centre for travellers. Mining, forestry and agriculture are also important to the local economy, as is tourism: Ashcroft belongs to an association of South Central Interior communities known as “Gold Country.” This association keeps the heady Gold Rush era alive for visitors through museum displays, heritage walking tours and exciting, themed events. Ashcroft is also known for its vibrant artisan community.
Apart from the Thompson River, which runs alongside it, the landscape consists of an arid, sagebrush-covered valley floor surrounded by dry hills and mountain ranges. A desert climate means sunny days are the norm winter and summer.
