Anahim Lake

Nimpo Lake - Tourism BC
Nimpo Lake, Tourism BC photo

Surrounded by the Itcha and Ilgachuz Mountains, the dramatic Rainbow Mountains, as well as glaciers, icefields, pristine lakes and dramatic waterfalls, the Anahim Lake/Nimpo Lake region offers superb wilderness adventures.

Anahim Lake, population 1200 in winter to about 1500 in summer, is located about 312 km west of Williams Lake, a 15 minute drive west of Nimpo Lake. It is the largest settlement in the West Chilcotin and home to the Anahim Lake Rodeo – held every July and probably the most well known event in the area.

Activities at Anahim Lake and surrounding area:

With daily flights from Vancouver International Airport, Anahim Lake offers superb fishing, with fly-fishing in the Upper Dean River or pristine wilderness lakes.

West of Anahim Lake, Tweedsmuir Provincial Park is home to the awe-inspiring volcanic Rainbow Range, the glacier-capped Coast Mountains as well as alpine meadows and one of Canada’s highest waterfalls.

Visitors can hike or horseback ride along historic and scenic backcountry trails, sharing the landscape with abundant wildlife from grizzly bears and Bighorn sheep to caribou.

Nearby Anahim Peak which is part of Tweedsmuir Park offers a bit of history plus a spectacular view of a pillared cone of volcanic rock; this is another site for obsidian, the important trading commodity for the Chilcotins as it was used extensively for weapon making.

Paddlers can glide along a six lake canoe circuit or challenge Class IV rapids while river rafting through a narrow lava gorge.

In winter, this scenic area offers snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
