Everything you love about Summer is available in Fernie, British Columbia. Summer is short here in the land of Deep Snow (for those skiers) but it is sweet in the Elk Valley. We made a trip here specifically for the epic mountain biking...many go to Fernie for the cross country mountain biking trails but what really rocks here is some of the best downhill mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort. We found a great variety of trails from mild to scary...well some very technical riding for sure! What I liked is that my kids are just getting into the sport and there were fantastic intro trails that had nice berms and good-lines to make it easy to get used to the speed and excitement of downhill mountain biking. With over 37 trails we enjoyed a solid week of riding! we also mixed in some great hiking and did the Ridge traverse on the Lizard Headwall- don't miss this one if you like views and pure natural scenery!

Ski Fernie and Kimberley

As Fernie Alpine Resort and Kimberley Alpine Resort are about 1 1/2 hour apart from each other it makes it very easy to ski both on the same trip. We stayed in slopeside ski in/ski out lodging (Trickle Creek Lodge) at the base of Kimberley Alpine Resort and my family enjoyed the long fall-line groomed runs! Kimberley was a hit for the kids- even tried finding the secret mine shaft on the slopes...Then it was off to Fernie for the powder seekers! We left Kimberley a little after 8am and we were on the lifts at Fernie before 10am. The terrain at Fernie is unbelievable and the new gladed runs in Currie Bowl were lots of fun! These resorts make a great combination and take care of all of the needs of all ability levels

Delta Airlines offers ski flights to Canadian Rockies

We have just heard from some of friends in the states about this fantastic new air service into Canadian Rockies International. Non-stop service from Salt Lake City, Utah. This air service gives you access to some of the best skiing in the Canadian Rockies- with less than 12 minute drive to Kimberley Alpine Resort, and or about 1hr to either powderful Fernie Alpine Resort or Panorama Mountain Village. There are also great seat sale prices for packages now available. So this might be the best way to access the Canadian Rockies as in the past many would use the Calgary, Alberta gateway. But now with this new Delta Air Service it is much easier to land in British Columbia and have quicker access to skiing and no mountain passes to drive. In fact it might be the closest airport in Canada to skiing!!

Also it is great to see all of the resorts that are served by this flight are now fully open and have great skiing and riding conditions

It is only October and it is already snowing in Fernie, BC. This picture shows snow falling at Fernie Alpine Resort- home to 37 feet of snow last winter! That was the most snowfall of any major resort in Canada.

we visited Kimberley last winter and had a wonderful experience! We found out that a lot of the locals do not know truly how much there is to do in this great place- so we set out to find most of the adventures ourselves. We had two young kids in tow. We skied the whole mountain- our son loves trying to find all of the old mine tunnels that are hidden on the slopes and our daughter loved the new glades. We enjoyed the great grooming and fall line. We tried the Nordic centre! this place is huge and there is no promotion about it! also night lit track- loads of fun. We also snowshoed down from mountain to an old barn (restaurant). We then went to a tipi at night to hear a wolf howl....no kidding. So we are going back- sure to find more fun!
