There we are! I much enjoyed this day; a scrabble at the Smithers Golf and Country Club made the end of a day that much more enjoyable.  Teams were scheduled to six holes, and we all got to hit the ball from the closest to the target.  A dinner and a silent auction was to follow.

Smithers RCMP Musical Ride 2009

On July 15, 2009 the RCMP came to Smithers to show some talent at our very own Fair Grounds.  The two shows at 2 and 7 filled the stands.  This was a awsome treat for residents, and the very special people from out of town.  This was the first time the show has been held in Smithers for almost 20 years.  The proceeds went toward funding local community policing initiatives.

CN Smithers

I know that the guys of CN are working hard,so why not take the train from Prince George to Prince Rupert is a fine idea of relaxing and taking up the scenery in BC.  Choosing Totom class is where you get to relax in the panoramic dome, and enjoy a hot meal.  The Comfort class provides an economy of total comfort.  Traveling by train in the winter is also a very fine idea because you don't have to pay by class (hint, hint).

The Central Park Building in Smithers includes an Art Gallery, Museum, and a Dance Studio.  I think the the building is intresting from the back, and not too many people get to see or notice it.  Enjoy!

The Bulkley Valley Museum Presents: A Smithers Culture Crawl. The crawl takes visitors on a remarkable and fascinating stroll.  Our Culture Crawl explores the Swiss and Dutch migration to Smithers, history of Music in the Bulkley Valley, the history of the Fire Department, breathtaking gardens, and unique Aladdin and Eaton kit homes.  Every day at 12 noon a sirine sounds from our fire hall, so one Friday I had to ask if I could take some pictures from the tower.  Enjoy!

 Bonjour,

Smithers is so exciting during the summer months.  I like to go hiking and canoeing in remote locations then participate in Smithers community events after an early morning.

Mountain View Adventures - Horseback Riding

For a great view of Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers, take a trail ride on horseback with Mountain View Adventures.  It’s a family owned business of experienced riders.  Beginner riders can enjoy trail rides ranging from 1 hour to 4 hours, but riders with more experience can enjoy 5-7 hour trail rides, even overnight trips.  With a few quick riding commands and tips you’re ready to follow behind the lead riders through a variety of landscapes from tall grass fields, to dense forested areas to wide mountain top ridges.  The view is spectacular once you and your trusty stead reach the lookout points along the Bulkly Ranges of the Hazelton Mountains.  If you happen to be camping while in the Smithers/Telkwa area, Tyhee Provincial Park is a great place to set up a tent or park an RV, and Mountain View Adventures is conveniently just a ways down the road on Telkwa High Rd. leading towards acres of farmland into the country.

Hudson Bay Mountain Hoopla

Inspired by a North America-wide Burton contest that encouraged growth and participation in women’s snowboarding, seven friends and I embarked on a six-mountain, seven-day snowboarding tour of northern BC in February 2009. The fifth hill we hit was Hudson Bay Mountain in Smithers.

We were once again blessed by fabulous sunny weather at Hudson Bay Mountain. (We couldn't have ordered better weather for all the photos we were taking at each mountain – seven blue bird days in a row!)?

When we arrived we saw a lady snowboarder sporting one of our tour ‘Shred the Gnar‘ hoodies we had shipped to the mountain before we left home and we were once again given a great welcome.

With only the afternoon to ride we loaded up on the chair and rode down to the T-bar and enjoyed zero wind, a nice treat for us Terracites who like to visit our nearest mountain neighbours from time to time.?

It was ladies ski day at Hudson Bay Mountain so it was fortuitous that we were there on the same day. We met up with some long lost friends from the snowboard industry and ate a delicious lunch in the lodge.

Hudson Bay Mountain wins our award for best menu in the north - those spicy burritos were fantastic and the menu offered lots of unique options. We also really enjoyed the live music in the chalet (which is a gorgeous building, by the way) and were super impressed with the attention to detail at the hill. It was a real treat to see how much was happening at Hudson Bay Mountain!

The highlight of the day was getting a chance to ride the new Rotary Trail to Town - a ski-out that goes right from the top of the mountain all the way to the Smithers townsite.

Two women on our tour, Tara and Sarah Z, are both Rotarians in Terrace and were really excited to see what a terrific asset to the community their sister clubs in Smithers helped create. The wide groomed run winds its way down the mountain all the way to a wide open field. It was a fantastic way to end the day.

Folks at Hudson Bay tell us lots of the young folks will take the bus up to the hill then ride down to get picked up by their parents. That's pretty awesome when you're a teenager with no drivers’ licence. And loads of fun when you're an adult and don't feel like driving 24 km down the access road!??

A huge thank you to the Hudson Bay Mountain crew for great hospitality! And a special thanks to the great staff at Hudson Bay Lodge hotel in Smithers who graciously provided us with accommodations on our last night of our big adventure. (Oh, and the pub and menu at Hudson Bay Lodge is fantastic with great service too!)
