Prince Rupert is cool!

I just returned from Prince Rupert, and had a great time! I went on a tour of Pike Island, which has petroglyphs and a longhouse, with Seashore Charters. We ate (and drank!) at Rain Dining Lounge, which was super funky AND had amazing food! I also stayed in a brand new suite at The Crest Hotel, and it was awesome - kitchen with granite countertops, entertainment area, flatscreen, fireplace, king size bed... I didn't want to leave it.

Wow in the Great Bear Rainforest

King Pacific Lodge in the Great Bear Rainforest would be a great place to go, kick back and relax  - IF there wasn't so much cool stuff to do!!!

I'm not usually one of those people with FOMO - you know, "Fear Of Missing Out"!  On vacation, I can usually kick back with a book and be perfectly happy for at least a day or two, but not at KPL... there are too many things worth doing (and once you're there, it's all-inclusive!) So, when our plane belly-landed in Barnard Harbour,  I arrived at a floating adventure playland, and had to make some tough decisions:

Why spend time with a book when I can go kayaking at low tide, and see seastars, anenomes, sun stars and eagles?

Why take a long bath when there's a Rainforest hike, or cultural tour to Hartley Bay First Nation to go on?

Why spend time on the internet when there are humpback whales bubblenet feeding nearby, just waiting to have their picture snapped?

Why sleep late when I can go visit Cetacealab, an independent whale research station?

Why diet on vacation? There are no mere meals at King Pacific Lodge, there are amazing gastronomic experiences! Pacific Northwest cuisine, paired with BC wines, healthy BC-sourced fresh food, lovingly prepared by lodge's chefs. Executive Chef Maxim Ridorossi's creations are sublime. (Did I mention there are only 28 guests at a time - with a staff of 24 - 30 to take care of them?)

So, the answer to all of the questions was - PARTAKE and ENJOY. It's a once in a lifetime experience, and has to be experienced fully to be truly appreciated!

Just north of Prince Rupert, near the Alaska Panhandle, is the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary. Although the sanctuary is remote and protected, travellers can visit the area on a boat tour from Prince Rupert. I recently joined Prince Rupert Adventure Tours on a visit to see the bears - we spotted five grizzlies that day! You'll get a sense of what the experience is like from my video.

Fishing in Prince Rupert

Over the years Prince Rupert has become a Tourism Destination for Fishing Charters.  Recreational fishing charters have sprung up everywhere. I just wanted to share a picture of a shot taken from Frohlich's Fish Guiding in Prince Rupert.

While in Kitimat one of the things that was highly recommended, as a way to see the most of our province is to take the train from Prince Rupert east to Prince George. I love this train! It was the perfect journey from the northern coast to the north eastern part of the province. It travels along the Skeena River, past Native Petroglyphs and glaciers, and winds its way along lakes and forests. One of the great things about the trip is the opportunity to meet lots of people from all over the world. The trip I took included some wonderful folks from England, Scotland, Australia, Germany, and the US. We all had our cameras out for most of the journey. It has to be one of the most amazing - and relaxing trips I have ever taken.

The coastal port city of Prince Rupert in Northern BC is right at the mouth of the beautiful Skeena River. There are many ways to get to Prince Rupert, by ferry, cruise ship, by train or by air or you can drive. Driving takes about 18 hours north from Vancouver, flying takes 2 hours. Either way, getting there is half the fun, as the scenery is simply stunning. There are LOTS of things to see and do in, and around Prince Rupert.  A great starting point is the Tourism BC Info Centre. Its in the tourist area known as Cow Bay.  The staff is very friendly, and they have tons of suggestions depending on what your interests are.  I started at the Museum of Northern BC, and was very impressed with the collection of native artifacts from thousands of years ago. I popped into the Ice House Art Gallery, to find a huge selection of exquisit works by area artists. And of course, while your on the coast, sampling the seafood is a must. Smiles Cafe has been in Prince Rupert since the 1920's and I highly recommend the halibut and chips. Lip Smaking good!  A few more things I can recommend for your visit to Prince Rupert is to bring lots of layers. No matter what time of year, this is northern port city, and the weather tends to change frequently. And because Prince Rupert and the surrounding area is vast in terms of geography, make sure you leave lots of time to play!

Arriving at Prince Rupert late Sunday evening I stayed at the Eagle Bluff Bed and Breakfast located at Cow Bay.  This quaint building on the waterfront of Prince Rupert adds a touch of east coast flavor by its wood construction and colours.  The breakfasts are tremendous, the hosts making you feel right at home.

Cow Bay is a quaint pocket community in Prince Rupert.  It received its name from the first settler that brought in cows that were pushed of the barge. Today the cow is iconic, images of the bovine seen everywhere.

A short distance from  Prince Rupert is the North Pacific Cannery, the last of its kind on the BC coast.  Designated as a National Historic Site, North Pacific Cannery allows the visitor to step back in time to experience salmon processing at its prime.

Yes, B.C. is truly beautiful! Coming down the coast from Prince Rupert, kayaking in Tofino, walking around Victoria and exploring the fascinating sections of Vancouver were activities that made pleasant memories. So were many of the hotels, inns and even hostels I stayed in particularily memorable. The Ocean Island has the most fantastic house of suites I would suggest to anyone from my grandmother to my son.

Inside Passage Journey

Just back from a family wedding up in Prince Rupert and had to share with folks how great the trip up via BC Ferries was (Port Hardy/Prince Rupert onbaord Northern Adventure).  We saw a lot of whales; probably 20 orcas and a five or so grey.  The scenery is impressive and I have lived on the Coast most of my life- including the northern end of Vancouver Island so I honestly thought I'd be a bit bored by it all.  We travelled as large group- ten or so family members and we were all impressed.  They do a casual bbq on one of the decks- it was very impressive, very west coast and relaxed! There was a 2 year old, 8, and 15 year old with us and they were all equally entertained.  I would strongly recommend booking a cabin- we did and it was great especially for the kids and a mid day nap- its an EARLY start!

Prince Rupert has some nice parts- great museum, loved "Cow Bay Cafe"- amazing fresh food, Cowpuccion's Cafe is great too- we were there every morning for coffees and bagels.  The sunken gardens were pretty.  The surrounding area is very scenic- lots of great hiking/camping.  We spent a sunny day at Diana Lake- water was chilly for me but the kids loved it.

There is so much to see and do in this province, I love exploring it it always makes me so happy that this is home!
