What I love the most about Kimberley Mountain is the fact the entire mountain is always open! When you get a good snowfall, it turns into a winter playground. A great time to visit this mountain is right after the holidays. This is when you can really avoid the crowds and take advantage of the open runs.

Wow, I can't believe none of my relatives told me about this area. Kimberley is fantastic, one traffic light, 7000 people and its all in the mountains. I moved here August 1st and commute to Cranbrook with NO rush hour traffic, and no line ups. People are friendlier here than in Sidney.

What do yodelling and woodcarving have in common?
Usually not much, but in Kimberley, yodelling and woodcarving are happily intertwined at a small shop owned by Adi Unterberger, also known as the “Yodelling Woodcarver”.
I was part of a group that recently visited Kimberley. We were lucky enough to get an impromptu yodelling performance from Adi. During our visit, Kimberley’s famous yodelling cuckoo clock was on the fritz. Adi stepped in to fill the yodelling void. He popped on a feathered hat, put on his accordion, and yodelled away.
I was smiling the whole time he was yodelling – it was a lot of fun! I even ended up buying one of Adi’s CDs (“When it’s Springtime in the Rockies”).
Adi’s store is located in Kimberley on the platzl near the cuckoo clock. Drop by to check out his original woodcarvings or maybe even pick up a yodelling CD of your own.

Kimberley is one of those lovely mountain towns that you want to return to time and time again. Each trip I make there I discover something new that strengthens my afinity for small towns in the Kootenays. On a recent trip I was fortunate to dine at the Old Bauernhaus Restaurant which is located a few minutes from Kimberley's popular Platzl, on the road to the Kimberley Alpine ski resort. The building itself is fascinating. Built in 1640 in Bavaria, it was dismantled, shipped to Kimberley in 1987 and rebuilt as a warm, inviting restaurant. We had "the feast" which pretty much sums it up. Course upon course of slowcooked food arrived at the table. It just kept coming and I just kept eating it all because it was absolutely delicious. The food is German, which has never been a favourite of mine....but I am now a convert and will be back on my next visit to this lovely town.

I love my chai! And wherever I travel, I love to find the best cup there is to be had. Turns out, if you climb the steps of The Bean Tree, a local cafe in Kimberly, you can get the best cup of chai and a cozy, funky, friendly place to chill out, or warm up, from a day of skiing or shopping the platzl.
Ok, I admit it, I was shopping... so here's another tip - The Perfect Present, a kitchen shop in the platzl, sells a wicked pumpkin fudge!
