Come for a mush! I headed into the cool little town of Fernie and took a ride
with Fernie Dog Sledding. The team of Alaskan Huskies take you on an
exciting outdoor adventure through the spectacular Elk Valley
wilderness near Fernie, British Columbia! You even get to try mushing! These dogs love to run and my favorite travel partner was Peggy... you'll see at the end of this vid!

Up at Fernie Alpine Resort, I finished a
day of great tree-skiing and then headed into the village for some apres ski
at the Griz Bar. There I ran into a local who tells me about the
Griz Legend that explains why Fernie gets its special brand of powder
snow! I should also mention that the apres is so good up there I ended up passing out in a slopeside igloo at the end of the night!

Whenever visitors come to see me in Fernie I take them to this spectacular viewpoint of the Lizard Range. You look acreoss the Elk Valley to the Three Bears, prominent rocky summits within the massif above Island Lake. This spot is just 3km from downtown Fernie on River Road.

Adventure Source Tours in Fernie BC takes it to the next level. They taught us how to mush our own dogsled team. With mini sleds called lightsleds, we ran our own teams of two dogs. This was a truly once in a lifetime experience. Oh and the views and every dog were fantastic.

I just received the winter issue of
British Columbia Magazine and the front cover is spectacular – a fabulous shot of downtown Fernie all decked out in sparkles and wrapped in a perfect winter wonderland! The snow-sprinkled mountains in the background seem as though you can walk from Main Street to mountain top in less than five minutes. No wonder
Fernie is getting praises from the likes of
Rolling Stone,
Outside,
Conde Nast Traveler, and
National Geographic Adventure. Read a portion of the
British Columbia Magazine article on Fernie here.
Also in the winter issue: a photo essay on
jellyfish; a feature on
Rossland (another B.C. winter resort town); Vernon's
Hot Air Balloon festival; and a kayaking journey in
Haida Gwaii, where decaying Haida carvings compelled two famous artists, Emily Carr and later Bill Reid, to preserve the past for future generations.
Perfect reading for a day like today; the snow has been coming down since last night and I am sitting in front of my fireplace after shoveling the neighbour’s sidewalk, hot chocolate and magazine in hand.
