There was so much to do on our last vacation we didn't know where to start! We had to choose from fishing off of the pier, boogie-boarding on one of the many sandy beaches, going on a nature hike on one of the many trails, going on a whale watching charter boat, rock climbing at the local rock climbing facility, AND swimming at various lakes and rivers.
We chose McIver lake just outside of Campbell River, heading up the highway towards Gold River. It's about a 6 minute drive, and on the right hand side of the highway. Once we arrived at our destination we soon realised how popular it was by the amount of vehicles parked at various locations lakeside.
We stopped and piled out with the kids running full tilt for the lake with me in the hottest persuit I could muster. I got within eyesight and stopped in my tracks. Now I am a North Island girl, and let me tell you, honestly, the sight of my kids splashing happily in the glorious heat of summer, well it's something I will not forget.

We went on the greatest whale watching voyage. We saw orcas, eagles, salmon jumping right out of the water to be photographed and a dall's porpoise playing. I would highly recommend the Discovery Marine Safaris. The staff is friendly and informative. They care about the whales and are very cautious when boating near them. The boat is stopped and a hydrophone is lowered so you can hear these great creatures talking as they swim by. Lunch is served and the sandwich, veggies, fruit and dessert are delicious. It is well worth the driving time to take the scenic route from Victoria to this quaint little town. There are great little restaurants for dinner and if you are lucky you will see seals and orcas right there in the harbour. We are definitely coming back for the grizzley tour!

A short one hour helicopter ride from Vancouver Airport and I was dropping into the wilderness of Sonora Island (off the coast of British Columbia, near Campbell River) and the luxury of Sonora Resort. The resort itself was impressive, but what I was more surprised at were all the things to see and do during my stay. Like a huge playground for the wildlife - eagles, seals, killer whales, dolphins and salmon to name a few! Salmon fishing is the reason most people stop by this remote part of BC and I caught the fish to prove it. 28.5 pounds to be exact (see attached photo!).
Be sure to stay at least 3 nights, 4 if you can. It’s definitely worth it!

If you're from around Campbell River you already know this spot, But for people traveling or the odd person who just doesn't about Stories Beach - come and relax with the view. A camp fire and hotdogs are always good ways to put a smile on anyone's face and when it comes with a great sand beach and a view like this you feel like staying for a while for sure.

Bring the kids and stay for the day... or the week. If you find yourself in the Campbell River area looking for a good camping spot this one is perfect for the whole crew. Located 25 mins south of Campbell River on Hwy 19a, Miracle Beach is easy to find and has everything you'll need for a camping stay(no power) or even just the perfect day at the beach. The park is forested and on the beach, sandcastle building, sunning, swimming, exploring tide pools, are just a few of the great options at this beautiful park. We found this great little nature hut which had a guided tour was and was great for the kids. We finished our day with a sunset walk along the beach trail and would recommend this spot to any family wanting a getaway from the world.

How can you not want to stop in for a look when it's only a 15 min walk to see a great view like this at Elk Falls Park near Campbell River. When you get out of your car in the upper parking lot you can feel the energy from this 25 meter water fall. Dont be fooled in to thinking that you have seen it all once you make it to the falls there is much to see. The trail system in the park is well marked and is set up so you can do as much or as little as you like but the full hike should take around 3 1/2 hours. The shorter route i took was only around an hour. The route i followed passes the main falls before a nice walk along the river as you walk up to a smaller falls and a great area for a lunch.

With the weather as hot as it is people are always looking for the perfect place to kick back for the day. The Quinsam pothole are now and have been a great choice for escape from the heat of the day. Located about 15 mins from Willis Rd turnoff in campbell river this is a spot you are going to need someone to show you as apose to stumbling across as it is quite a hidden jem. The water was perfect temperature and there is a great water fall(only 3 feet) that you can slide off in to a pool or even go under the falls if you can find your way under them. If your in the local area it is really worth while trying to track this beauty down but i warn you that it may be quite a hunt.

I found my self in a great spot for Canada Day this year with a chance to go out on a boat to see our Canada Day fireworks in Campbell River. I cant remember how many times I've seen them from the shore and thought to myself what a show it would be from the water and i must say i was not dissapointed. The sound and light coming off the water made the show so awesome you could feel it in your chest and the show was almost 15 mins long getting better with every blast. for anyone thinking or this kind of fun for next year's show you will have to make sure to call the tour company as they said that they would love to do this trip next year.

Located 15.5 km's from Campbell River the ripple rock trail was a perfect way to spend a sunny day. This 4km (1 1/2- 2 hours each way) hike will take you down to a beautiful beach before you start the climb up in to the forest for views that will stop you in your tracks time and time again. As you scale your way up and into the tree line you would never know Ripple Rock is the home of the largest non nuclear blast. Once in to the tree line you pass thu old growth forest and there are 2 great lookouts which we found perfect for some lunch. The last part of the trail was a little bit of a grind but was well worth it once you come out to the stunning view of Seymour Narrows and Quadra Island. I would recommend this hike to anyone in the area for even a day.
