Bowron Lake

View a larger image on flickr.com

The Bowron Lake area is a beautiful stop for outdoor enthusiasts and even for those who want to take in the serene view of the lake and surrounding landscape. Only about a 30 minute drive down a well-maintained dirt road will bring you to Bowron Lake and the start of the world renowned canoe circuit. At Bowron Lake Becker’s Lodge and Bowron Lake Lodge offer rustic cabins and camping a short distance from the lake itself or Bowron Lake Provincial Park offers well-maintained and forested sites a little further down the road. Even if you do not want to undertake the several-day canoe circuit you can rent canoes for the day to do some exploring or use the area as a quick access to hiking or Barkerville and Wells. Or simply lie on the quiet beach and enjoy the sunshine in a mountainous setting.

Free Rein Ranch

We spent an evening at Free Rein Ranch, just off of highway 24 and south of Bridge Lake.  It was a lovely evening out and we go ourselves a canoe and kayak and headed out onto the essentially private lake on the property.  Paddling around the lake at sunset was incredible.  What a way to spend an evening: still lake, gorgeous scenery and a a little bit of wildlife (loons!) to top it all off!

The evening continued with a little game of pool with the host of the ranch, Debbie.  We stayed in one of the lake front cabins, which was very comfortable and private.  In all, I would love to go back just to paddle a little more on the little lake!

World Class rowing in Langley

When you think of Langley, nestled in the rich and picturesque Fraser Valley, you think of the bounty of the harvest and perhaps the history of BC.  This is of course, the Birthplace of B.C.  But last weekend, a new event put Langley on the map as the community played host to the Canadian University Rowing Championships.  On the banks of the Fraser River, in what is referred to as the Bedford Channel, is one of the most spectacular and natural rowing venues you will ever find.  I didn't plan to be a spectator, but after a fabulous brunch at Wendell's, and an enjoyable afternoon shopping in the quaint village of Fort Langley, I found myself caught up in the excitement of the events taking place.  From what I observed last weekend, my conclusion is, this unique, friendly community and the new rowing venue should expect to welcome rowing enthusiasts from all over the world.  It's amazing - and it's right here in Langley.

Deer Lake Peddle Boating

I recently took my 8 year old daughter to Deer Lake in Burnaby to go peddle boating.  It was a first for both of us and we will definetly be back.  The folks at Deer Lake Boat Rentals were friendly, efficient and very encouraging as we began our one hour journey across the lake ($15 per hour).  We gingerly got into our 2 passenger peddle boat, learned how to steer and set off on our explorations which included seeing all sorts of ducks, a few very cool homes on the south side of the lake, lots of canoers and kayakers (DLBR also rents canoes and kayaks), beautiful lily pads and willow trees.  We felt like we were miles from civilzation.  A highlight for me was seeing the Arthur Erickson designed Baldwin House hugging the shores of the lake.  At the end of the hour we headed back to shore to enjoy ice cream off the ice cream truck, "just like when I was a kid", and for a carousel ride at Burnaby Village Museum across the street.  My legs felt like jelly all day from the peddling, but it was a wonderful adventure!

Canoeing in the Columbia's

Some girlfriends and I decided that we wanted to go "tripping". So we planned meals, got organized and got out in our canoes for the weekend. We decided to paddle a section of Lake Revelstoke, as some of the girls only had flatwater experience.

We put in at the Goldstream and pulled out at the Downie Loop. We had two days of seeing nothing but wild places and wildlife. It was easily one of the most memorable experiences of my life.

I had a really hard time choosing just one photo, but the one I selected was a nice little lunch stop we made along the way.

Powell River Forest Canoe Route

Paddling enthusiasts familiar with British Columbia have likely heard of the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit, which is phenomenal.  A lesser known “great find” is the Powell River Forest Canoe Route.

Much like Bowron, the Powell River route is a 4-5 day adventure involving paddling through a network of lakes with several portages.  Bowron is definitely the easier and more developed of the two (hence it’s popularity) so if you’re looking for more challenging portages and fewer people, Powell River may be the route for you.

Tip: Make sure you do your homework and plan ahead because you finish in a different place than where you start, so pre-arranged transportation logistics are necessary.  Additionally, you want to be on some lakes early to avoid the afternoon headwinds.
