One of my favourite ways to spend a snowy winter afternoon in Prince George is cross country skiing at Otway Nordic Centre. Otway is tucked into the forest, only minutes outside of the city and has miles and miles of trails for all levels of skiers. There's also a biathlon range and it's great to watch the biathletes target shooting. At the end of the day, the new lodge is a good place to warm up. There are some snacks available for purchase at the ticket/rental counter but bring your own flask of hot chocolate to enjoy.

Had the most magical evening last night in Rossland. We went with Le Petit Fromage to a cabin out at the BlackJack Cross Country Ski Club. It was wonderful- Bridget had the cabin warmed up by fire and the table dressed for a banquet! We skiied out (took us about 30 minutes) and had a fabulous meal- Cheese fondue, cold meats, salad and to finish it off chocolate fondue. The ski back took us a bit longer (may have been due to the schnapps, beer and wine which we consumed!) This was a fantastic and authentic Kootenay experience- would highly recommend it to others.

Dakota Ridge still has snow up top on trails to ski. Could be there for another couple of weeks or more. This area has snow on the ground for 8 months of the year. Only 1 short ferry ride and a 40 minute drive from Langdale ferry terminal. Great veiws of Georgia Strait and howe sound. Many miles of area to ski, snow shoe or just hang out in the snow. The Picture was taken May 17th 08.

I have been an avid downhill skier for many years and decided this year to challenge myself and try cross country skiing. What an eye opener that was. I have a new found respect for this sport.
A group of us ventured out with our guides on a starry moonlit cold and crisp evening, thinking what a perfect way to learn to cross country ski - no one would see us in the dark if by chance we fell. The experienced skiers strapped on their head lamps while we novices put flashlights around our necks.
What an amazing experience, the trail was so quiet (with the exception of an occasional groan from one of us) and the stars were brilliant. The best part was we all succeeded. With tips from our guides we were able to complete our course and return to the village with triumphant cheers!
My recommendation is to go ahead and have that wonderful cheesecake for dessert then head out for an evening cross country ski. You will have an evening that will raise your heart rate and make you feel like a champion!

I live in Vancouver, and while the city provides much needed cultural excitement and entertainment, i often need to get away from the crowds and head up to the interior of BC for quiet nights and star filled skies.
I grew up in
Clearwater, a little town known for being the 'gateway' to
Wells Gray Park, and I love to head back there in winter or summer for all the amazing outdoor activities. Since it is enroute to Jasper and Banff National Park, Clearwater gets just enough tourism to have the infrastructure you need, without the crowds.
Some of my favourite things to do if you are there...
Cross Country Skiing in the winter: There are over 80 kilometres of groomed ski trails in Clearwater with 3 major set tracks; Candle Creek trails, North Thompson Park, and Wells Gray trails. Visit www.clearwatervalley.com/winter/winter_activities.htm for more information.
Canoeing in Wells Gray Park on Clearwater or Azure Lake - beautiful! Visit www.wellsgray.ca/canoe.html for more information and pictures.
Hiking: there are endless opportunities for hiking in Clearwater including Raft Mt. and the Trophies, any of the waterfalls including Helmcken Falls, and of course any of the well maintained trails in the Park. Visit www.britishcolumbia.com/regions/towns/?townID=3395
Some of my favourite places to stay are:
- Helmcken Falls Lodge: at the entrance to the park with a number of cabins and a lodge.
www.helmckenfalls.com
- Cedar Haven Cabins: less than 1 km from the Candle Creek ski trails on Raft Mountain with nice log cabins incl. kitchens.
www.cedarhavencabins.ca
I've already planned my trip there for this August - can't wait!

Just spent 3 days snow shoeing and cross country skiing above Sechelt. Was only a 45 min ferry ride from Vancouver. About 40 min drive from Ferry to snow area. Snow was amazing and heard there was even a cougar in the area so we satyed at a B&B instead of camp in snow. We thought there must have been 8 ft of snow. The view was spectacular of all Georgia Strait. You could see the gulf islands and upto comox.
Road up was plowed yet we never saw the plow truck. he must come and plow in middle of the nite.
Even found some areas we could snow board.
` We will be back

The mountains of the Lower Sunshine coast are loaded with trails in summer and winter. There is over 10 feet of snow and it is easy to get lost in the beauty. From the top of Dakota Ridge you can see as far as Mt Baker, and back side of Cypress and Howe sound. Minutes later you can see as far as gulf islands and across to Nanaimo and up to Texeda island and Comox.
There are ski trails and snow shoe trails to remote areas in the 4500 ft range or more. The Dakota Ridge winter Rec site will be a big bonus to the area. A short 15 minute drive up the logging road from Wilson creek and you are in a winter wonder land. From Nov till may there is plenty of snow.
Sites to look at www.dakotaridge.ca and www.tetoutdoor.ca You can ski and play in the snow and 30 minutes later be Kayaking the many miles of Scenic coastline.

Dakota Ridge is a
620-hectare, high altitude (3500-4000 feet)
plateau located above a working forest watershed.
One of the key advantages of the area is its central location to both
Gibsons and Sechelt. With good road access, locals will be skiing within
30-40 minutes and visitors from Vancouver within less than two hours.
Currently, the road is gated 3-4 km before the actual nordic trails.
The site is considered by experts to be excellent for a cross
country ski area and second to none in the entire Lower
Mainland area.
The Dakota Ridge receives annual snowpacks equal to or exceeding
Cypress Mountain or Whistler Mountain!
Particularly attractive is the gently rolling terrain with large safe
areas for skiing.
There is no major alteration of the natural environment
proposed or required in the actual ski area. Cross country skiing on 20
feet of snow can do little damage to the environment.
Historically the snow is consistently reliable on Dakota Ridge from
mid-November to late May!
Expected Services next winter (Nov 2007-April 2008)
* Access: SCRD is hoping that the 13 km access road to trail-head
will be accessible and maintained. Vehicles must be prepared for winter
driving conditions, with 1000 m incline up rough forest service road.
* Facilities: At least 17 km of trails developed for cross
country skiing and snowshoeing, warming and washroom facilities
available, full signage, kiosks and mapping of trails
* Services: Trails groomed approximately 5 days per week, Dakota
Ridge website with updated weather, road and trail conditions, webcam,
volunteer ski patrol, special winter community events.

The Mountains above Sechelt still have lots of snow in mid May. This area gets snow from mid oct and can still have snow on the ground in may. This year has been a slower melt so there maybe snow at 3000 ft level till mid June. This is a great area for skidooing, cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Just a 13 km drive up a gravel road gets you to the snow. There are plans in the works to have a fully groomed cross country ski area with 17kms of trails. And many miles of un touched snow and trails with great veiws. Like over looking Howe sound and even all the way to Mt Baker. and then over to nanaimo and up to Comox.
This may be the next Holly Burn or Hemlock Valley. If you want to get away from the crowds and want lots of snow this is the area to try out. It is a secret so do tell anyone, we don't want a stampede.
Check out Dakota Ridge on the Web or the Tetrahedron. Come and play in the snow and 30 minutes later be Kayaking. A 35 min ferry ride and short drive is all that keeps you away from lots of snow.
